Nicholson Chapter V: The St. Eloi Craters and Mount Sorrel, 1916

Most people remember St. Eloi for the Great War images of the great mines that were exploded by the Canadian's in March and April 1916. As you can see in Google Earth, remnants of the water holes left by the mines exist today. Craters #1, #2 and #4 make it easy to line up this image.

Although not one of the St. Eloi mines, the film strip of the Hawthorn Mine at the Somme in July 1916 shows the devastating power of these underground mines:
