OK, I'm jumping ahead of myself, but I resumed keeping track of places with this book, The Nutmeg of Consolation, the 14th in the series. Eventually I'll go back and get the 11th, 12th, and 13th books, but that'll come in time.
These place marks include the real locations, as well as one fictional place (Pulo Prabang) created by Patrick O'Brian.

The placemarks are for locations in O'Brian's 15th book, Clarissa Oakes in Great Britain and Canada and The Truelove in the United States. Note that the island of Moahu is fictional, so it's location is approximate, and, of course, all you see is sea.

The attached folder contains placemarks for The Wine-Dark Sea, the 16th book in Patrick O'Brian's opus. The placemarks stretch from the fictional island of Moahu, south of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, to the real (but unrealized in GE) islands of Diego Ramirez, at the south end of South America.
Enjoy!

After viewing the terrain around Portsmouth, England and reading in Dean King's "Harbors and High Seas", I think Ashgrove Cottage is closer to Buriton near the main road between Portsmouth and London. When he bought Ashgrove he could not afford the more affluent lands overlooking Portsmouth. However, there are higher elevations here that would have allowed Aubrey to see the harbor from his observatory. I wonder if there have been any mining activities in this area.

The location posted for Jack Aubrey's observatory seems to be the top of Butser Hill, a local landmark just west of the Portsmouth-London Road. It is generally thought among PoB fans that Ashgrove Cottage is about 1.5 miles east-south-east of this point, just south-east of Buriton, and the observatory is on a high point a further mile or so south of the cottage (I live near there!) - there is a 'hollow lane' as described in TMC ruuning up the Downs from near Buriton to close to the cottage.
