I am such a long way from getting to 13 gun salute, it took me about a month each for the first two books, but I am plowing onwards. However, a member of the gunroom:

http://www.hmssurprise.org

did these maps for nutmeg, which I thought were very nice and they give an idea of the start point ...

Thanks for that.
It seems that the Slave Coast is around Lome, togo
and the Gold Coast is Ghana, the principal towns being Akra and Cape Coast.

I did some surfing spots along the west coast of africa, but not those spots.. Did you know that there is excellent surf at Dakar??

Oh well, I should start reading them again.

Here is some good stuff on the Thirteen Gun Salute.

I am getting all my waypoints from the books as I re-read them, but pages like this really speed up the process of finding obsure locations on the map. Thanks.

I have just finished compiling the data for the short voyage of the
HMS Lively as described in HMS Surprise. This includes the raid at
Port Vendre and the landfall at Minorca to rendevous with Stephen.
Most of the places referenced in the description of Stephen's rescue
were fictional so they couldn't be included in the map. Would love to
hear from you if there are any real locations I missed.

I have also updated both Jack and Stephen's section of the map project
with any locations of interest that appeared in the books so far (up
to when Jack takes command of the Surprise for the first time).

I would love to hear any comments/suggestions.

P.S. I have also fixed the IE course line color problem, although
there are still some formatting issues that mean the site looks better
in Firefox ...

Great posts. I love the books of POB.
Sorry, where are the files for:
# The Reverse of the Medal
# The Letter of Marque
# The Thirteen-Gun Salute

Currently I am working on The Mauritious Command, so I have a while to go before I get to those books (I do a book approximately every 2 months).

However ...

The ultimately unsatisified errand to the East Indies and Jack's first voyage as captain of the HMS Surprise is now mapped. This voyage was a difficult one with a great deal of agonizing over the course of the ship from Rio round the cape, the path around Madagascar and the position of Venus and it's signficance for Testudo Aubreii (amongst others).

You can find this google map at:

As always, if you have any suggestions on these or any other points, please contact me at admin@cannonade.net.

Regards,
Tom

Hey Nemo,

Sorry, but you're a little out for Desolation Island. Patrick O'Brian must've been asked this alot because in the Thirteen Gun Salute, Jack (and O'Brian of course,) explains that Desolation Island is, in fact, not Kerguelen but "further south and east". It seems then he meant Heard Island. as pretty much the only place shouth and east of Kerguelen.

Hope that helps.
