Ok,
I had to do a little research for this one but I think I've got it figured out.
This is an amazing find.
As an instructor at the nearby USMC base I can tell you this is most likely 2 sections of Marine F-18s refueling for a frequent large scale training event that is run on that side of the base. The refueler is definitely an Airforce refueler though. It could be Airforce fighters but this area is mostly Marine air.
Sometimes the Airforce supports these big events with refuelers, but usually it's all Marine air for the close air support. That's why I think it's Marine F-18s using an Airforce refueler.
Without getting into boring specifics, this is an area of airspace designated for refueling.
I'm kind of surprised there are not more aircraft in the pictures around here. This is the main route of aircraft into LAX from the East. The lower airspace is divided in 2 right here for civilian aircraft to go around or way above the base. There is a remarkable amount of airliners in this area usually.
I hope this helps.
