A week ago I was thinking about customize my GE 4.3 interface (control gadgets). Some days ago, Barry Hunter made a screen overlay that gave me an idea of what we can do in that direction.

So, I edited this image:

C:/Program Files/Google/Google Earth/Res/new_ring_background.png

...and make this..

So now, as I turn my SpaceNavigator to look around, the image turns with "me" and if I look at the top of the gadget, I always know the geographical direction which Im looking at.

If you want to have this in your GE 4.3 version, simple download this image. Youll see just an "N" here but theres an image with transparencies..(rigth clic over it and save to your hard disk):

Then, go to this folder: C:/Program Files/Google/Google Earth/Res/ (For Windows XP --- For the MacOSX: Google Earth/Contents/Resources/ ), save a copy of the original image in other folder (new_ring_background.png), then rename the downloaded image with this name: new_ring_background.png and drag it to the "Res" folder. Say "Yes" when Windows prompt you if you want to overwrite that file.
Close GE, open it again and youll see the New Gadget.
Thanks to Solar_Eclipse for the Mac tip.

Enjoy!

Espaol:

Disfrtenlo!

This can be a start of a compass-design competition.

Great job Gerardo! It would be nice to come up with a script to "install" the image safely. Anyone know whether this will work for the Mac too?

Really cool!

Just a small point, aren't the numbers backwards? The cardinal points look fine, but you have the 45 & 315, and 225 & 135 numbers flipped. Between N and E should be 45?

(They are 'backwards' to normal in a the screenoverlay version, because the 'N' is the pointer, but in this version that rotates there is a virtual pointer (which could be implemented as a screenoverlay at the top, which marks the direction on the rose)

(hmm - my footer is now well out of date!)

Yes it would be better to have the degrees display clockwise...

For the Mac put the image in Google Earth/Contents/Resources/ and it will work just like it does on Windows.

Almost perfect Barry!...

Just a little small correction I would do is to erase this:

..so when the gadget gets transparent you dont see that part of the yellow stick...
