These locations are taken from an overlay of the Montgomery County Maryland Speed Camera Map provided by the county government. The Montgomery County map shows stretches of roads where mobile cameras will be placed - so we do not have exact locations at this time. When there was a school or pedestrian crossing, we made the assumption that the camera would be in that part of the road. Otherwise, we placed in in the middle of the stretch from the county map or in a place where it would be possible to set up a speed camera.

Eventually I will drive every one of these routes and add exact coordinates. But, until then this is the best I can do.

Thanks for doing this.
I'm not a speeder, and I haven't been nailed by these - or red light cameras for that matter, but I'm not crazy about the invasiveness of red light or speed cameras as well as the underlying rationale behind their program. That said, I'm not opposed to the current rationale behind MoCo's installation of these units.
Unlike DC's shameless revenue generation from their successful entrapment efforts, MoCo has primarily been situating these in school zones where speeding can be extremely hazardous. That is appropriate, IMO. On s/b Dufief Mill Rd. the county has a temp. radar unit that displays approaching motorists speed in large orange digital numerals. If they're exceeding 35mph, the display flashes in red. This is a very effective safety measure, IMO, as it creates a lasting image to the motorist of a site in which to carefully obey the speed limit. It's also commendable that the county is utilizing this as a warning to motorists to slow down before approaching speed cameras. It is not a permanent device, however.
My concern is that when the county gets a taste of the significant revenue that these generate, who's to say that they won't start installing these everywhere like parking meters - as revenue generators & not safety devices (like the way DC administers their program). County residents and motorists traveling through the county will have little or no input regarding in the expansion of this program.
I'm in the process of adding the exact sites of each MoCo speed camera to my portable GPS nav. unit and the built in nav. unit in my wife's car, so that a symbol appears as we approach a camera site. A symbol that appears when approaching a speed camera is a safety feature, as I see it. It will remind me that I'm entering a school zone, and I will confirm that I'm minding the speed limit.
So far, I've only entered the exact coordinate of 3 or 4 cameras, but as I travel, I'll be adding more. I'm also a few blocks from some proposed camera sites, so I'm keeping an eye out for any construction activity indicating new cameras.
Have you been gathering the coordinates of these cameras so that they can be entered into GPS units?
If you have any interest, I can provide the exact coordinates for Dufief Mill road (2 camera locations) and Montgomery Village Ave. More to come as I pass by them.

The posted KML was missing two of the three cameras I pass on regular basis. Re-reading the post, I see the positions were estimated from a map and/or position description. I've moved and renamed with the cross streets, two of the icons which I believe represent the missing two cameras. Changed the icon for the one whose position I'm confirming (icon for all three modified changed to a camera icon).

oops - forgot 2nd set of cameras on randolph in front of wheaton hs. original map has this pair in the middle of wheaton park. As before, included complete set of locations from original dataset with icon moved to actual location and icon changed to purple camera instead of yellow dot.

WOW. I'm suprised you caught the one on Grovesnor Ln. I actually saw them installing it. Is it just looking one way where the white line is heading from Rockville Pike toward Wildwood shopping center? It has at least 2 flashes and a camera box and it looks like some are at diff angles. I'm assuming it's one side as there's only a white line on that side. I spoke with someone who lives in the area and his friend got 2 tickets. It seems to be active as of this post.

Oh, while I'm at it... does anyone know the exceeded speed threshold for a ticket in 'LOCO' MoCo?

In DC I got a ticket from one of those parked on the side of the road police cruisers and the threshold was 11 MPH over! If I went 10 MPH over I wouldn't have gotten it ! DOH

jay

PS. I'm not sure I quoted the very first post in this thread but that's what I'm replying to..

I saw that the cameras on Wilson Lane in front of Landon School are now operative. I saw the big flash when the car in front of me went by. The cameras are closer to the main entrance of the school, across from Marbury Road. Idiot that I am, the last couple of weeks I've been wondering why they would bother putting cameras in that location. Duh.

I have a complete map of Montgomery County Fixed Speed Cameras on Connected Communities at http://connectedcommunities.us

The link to the map is:

http://connectedcommunities.us/showthread.php?t=22330

Data for the map has been supplied by the police departments in the following jurisdictions: Montgomery County, City of Rockville, City of Gaithersburg, Town of Chevy Chase, and Takoma Park.

Clicking on a map marker will show the camera location address, direction of enforcement, posted speed limit, school zone (if any), and the jurisdiction that operates the camera.

Map markers are color coded by jurisdiction.

The map also will show fixed speed camera locations that have made it through the permitting process and are under construction.
