The Mattole Wildlands Defenders have recently started using a camera trap with the goal of documenting rare and elusive wildlife in the unprotected Oldgrowth Douglas Fir Forests on Pacific Lumber land in the North Forks of the Mattole River. The current method we use is to set the trap on frequently used animal trails. We want to document the animals in their normal range so we are not using bait. The camera is equipped with a motion sensor. On Jan. 22nd of this year a Cinnamon colored
Black Bear (Ursus americanus) discovered the camera trap in Rattlesnake Creek and inspected it. The camera was found dangling from the tree upside down in a small creek. Luckily it was undamaged and was re-deployed in a more remote area of Oldgrowth Forest.
