This is what I consider as THE interchange. It may not be the most complicated, but it is where the two coast to coast (east to west) and border to border (north to south) freeways meet. I-15 from the Canada / US border in Montana to the Mexican border at San Diego (1435 mi.) and I-80 from Teaneck, NJ to San Francisco, CA. (2902 mi.). Coincidentally I-80 was finally completed in its coast to coast form in Salt Lake City and had an opening ceremony similar to the one for the completion of the transcontinental rail road. Which took place about 110 years before and about 60 miles to the north at the Golden Spike National Historic Site. Unfortunatly, it is not as historic that you could finally drive from coast to coast without having to stop (in theroy) or without seeing a stop light.

This, according to the NHSTA, is the most congested freeway interchange in the States. Approximately 27,000,000 man hours of work are lost by commuters waiting in traffic where the 405 and the 101 freeways merge here in Irvine, CA.
Actually, the point you reference is where the 5 and 405 meet. Commonly called the El Toro "Y". It's relatively easy to navigate.
The 101 and 405 meet in the San Fernando Valley. and is a mess under the best of conditions. Check my attachment for the correct location

This is the best one I've encountered. The Florida Turnpike, I-95, Palmetto Expressway, US 441, SR 7, North Miami Beach Blvd., and the railroad all intersect there. It is possible to take different routes through the interchange to get to the same place.

My problem with this post (and the bookmark) is that it's wrong -- that is, the marked location is the wrong location! This NOT the 101 and 405 location, which is almost 40 miles north of here in the city limits of Los Angeles, California-- the marked location is the 5 and 405 split, known locally as the "El Toro Y", and is in Irvine, CA.
Can you please update your placemarker to show the correct information? Thank you!
