Dead sperm whale in Keila, Hjelmsystauren Nature Reserve June 2007. The whale has probably drifted onshore already dead, and is not an example of "stranded whales". It was removed by the Norwegian Coast Guard, a week or to after this image was taken.

Welcome to the Google Earth Community Forum, gyrrus. This is a unique find here to my knowledge. Did you already know about this whale and went looking for it? It was pure coincidence that the event was in the same time frame as the satellite image. Good find and keep on exploring and posting.

Now that I see it, it looks familiar. I'm surprised the imagery has survived for three years. Good memory on ya' danes

Hi, sorry for being quite inactive on the site - I work as seabird scientist in the cliffs to the west of the spot. The green area up from the whale is remnants of an settlement Keila, burnt down in the end of the 2.WW by the Germans. Our scientific station/cottage can be seen 150m up NW to the whale. You might also see the green grassy areas in the seabird cliffs (mainly in shadows), fertilized by breeding atlantic puffins.

The whale stranded, probably already dead in late winter/early spring. Local people warned us before we went out to the Station early May. The weather was cold in early may, preventing the whale from smelling to much. Even though the Coast Guard removed the whale, it still did smell at the spot this summer ..

Thanks for the follow-up gyrrus. It's always good to get more details from those who actually are familiar with a location.

Thanks to the Panoramio layer we can now see the dead whale in full detail (except for the smell) as well as the science cabin.

Both finds - Norway and So. Africa - are astounding! Sometimes I forget that there's "real stuff" down there.
