I thought picturesque little Lundy Island could do with a little tour. Here is my attempt

Rather than cut and paste large swathes of information verbatim from web pages (I have not actually been to the island myself so I can't tell you anything original about it ) I thought I would provide a collection of pictures and links for further reading if you are interested.

The island has a long history and a number of ruins including the so-called Marisco Castle.

It is also known as a mecca for rock-climbing enthusiasts.

There are more images in each of the placemarks. The credits for all the images are included as links in the posts themselves. The included overlay is an old parish map from sometime before 1850. It is switched off by default - simply slide the slider to more opaque to make it come up.

Hello heamit

Today I looked at some areas with new updated images and found your placemarks on Lundy Island. For that reason I had a longer look at it as I would usualy have and read the wikipedia article too. This little island has a very interesting history, thank you very much heamit. The 4 celtic stones and the story about Marisco and Henry III are very interesting. I had also fun to read about Harman, who proclaimed himself as a king of the island with his own coins and stamps. His name reminded me on the german serialkiller Fritz Haarmann - The Butcher of Hannover.

The Four Celtic inscribed stones are here, I found them with the Sketch of Beacon Hill cemetery: 5110'0.93"N, 440'21.49"W

Best Regards, Felippo

Hi heamit

The island casts a brooding presence on that whole stretch of the N Cornish, North West Devon coast.

There is a local tale of the island being taken over by French privateers in the 1700's to be used as a base which to to launch raids on shipping. However, the local fisherman of Covelley decided that this could not stand and they would have do something about it.
So rather than confront the armed pirates head-on and risk violence, they decided to rowed over to Lundy under the cover of darkness (with cloth bindings on the oars to damp down any noise) and steal their boats.

All they had to do now is wait for their supplies and moral to run down. Four weeks later a delegation from the mainland went over to see the miscreants. What they found
was a bedraggled and hungry mob ready to accept their fate --- just to get off the island.

Nice job on this: but can I just make a couple of (very pedantic) remarks?

Firstly it is the Old Light: to use the suffix "house" is very much looked down upon. Secondly, the Marisco Castle does not exist: the castle on the island was bulit after they had gone. Their stronghold lies elsewhere : or at least what is left of it.

Thanks,

Peter
