Hi Gerado,
I was the communications engineer for South Pole station working for the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Primary Ops & Maintenance contractor for 7 years. Went down 9 times (austral summer only - rest of the year I did all my design, remote maintenance support for on-ice techs, equipment procurement, etc.) in Colorado. Trips were anywhere from 1 to 3 months depending on project that summer. So, I did not do scientific research, only made sure their comm systems were working and the systems are surprisingly sophisticated - its not just HF radio. Tourists to the Pole are relatively rare. There is a company that will take them there, but I hear its expensive ($15-$18k?). If you want to see a lot of really cool pictures of Antarctica, visit the NSF's US Antarctic Program photo gallery on their website:

Lots of really cool pix there - even some I took! LOL
Cheers.
