Michael -

I can't tell you how delighted I am to read this thread and your blog about one of the most beautiful regions on earth. I have spent many happy times in the redwoods, my very favorite being in Del Norte County*, in fact. Thank you for all you're doing.

*Those are the Big Redwoods. Foggy, cool, utterly quiet.

Especially troubling over the past twenty years or so was the purchase of Pacific Lumber Company from its owners of over 100 years in a hostile takeover by Maxxam Corp, a company with a history of purchasing companies and liquidating theis assets. In this case their assets were redwood trees which were clear cut, old growth and all as a quickly as possible.

Pacific Lumber under Maxxam so badly managed their assets that they declared bankruptcy. They were recently bought by Mendocino Redwood Co.

Quote:
SCOTIA, Calif. (AP) After more than 20 years of protests, the last two people living in the giant redwoods of Northern California were climbing down for good, convinced by the new owners of the forest that the ancient trees would be spared from the saw.

So quietly did the truce happen that almost no one involved can believe it. But the drawn-out, sometimes violent, battles between Pacific Lumber Co., the largest private owner of old-growth redwoods, and environmental activists who flocked here to save the trees, are history. Pacific Lumber has new owners, a new name Humboldt Redwood Co and a new pledge to protect old trees, some of which were around before Jesus was born.

The end began a few weeks ago, when Michael Jani, the president and chief forester of the new Humboldt Redwood Co., hiked into the woods to meet the tree-sitters.

"I went out, looked at the trees, looked at the stand of trees that were around them and I explained to them that under our policy, we would not be cutting those trees," said Jani, a 35-year veteran of logging companies.

Protecting old-growth trees was part of the plan that Humboldt Redwood, largely owned by Don and Doris Fisher of The Gap Inc., submitted to acquire Pacific Lumber in bankruptcy court. Among other things, Humboldt Redwood promised to spare any redwood born prior to 1800 with a diameter of at least four feet. It also pledged to avoid clear-cutting, or cutting down trees in vast swaths, a practice that the timber giant aggressively practiced under its previous owner, Maxxam Inc.

Tree-sits were just part of the fight that began almost as soon as Texas financier Charles Hurwitz, chairman of Maxxam Inc., acquired Pacific Lumber with junk bonds in 1986. Blockades of logging trucks, sit-ins at company offices, lawsuits by environmental groups and rallies attended by tens of thousands of protesters were part of the mix.

One of the most striking things about our walk of the range of the redwoods was the amount and extent of old growth gallery redwood forests in Big Sur. These are some of the most beautiful and extensive pure stands of old growth redwood left in the entire range. This is a first attempt to completely digitize these stands to demonstrate their extent.

We would appreciate any input people have on the job we have done. If you know where there are other stands or see problems with this coverage, please let us know. There are some stands that have had a certain amount of cutting that we have labeled as Old Growth, we will modify these in the days to come.

Today, 30 September 08, I went back to the place where we found the northernmost redwood tree because I could see a place on Google Earth, a small remnant patch of old growth north of the Chetco River, where I thought I might find a redwood. I returned to the Chetco River across the Oregon border and started up an old logging road just to the west of Elk Creek and then headed up a side branch that went into the old growth. On the road up I started seeing small redwoods but no stumps, so they could have been planted. I broke into the old growth about 2/10 of a mile in and there was a lot of Douglas fir. Then on the northern side of the creek I saw a nice tree and it was a honker old growth redwood tree. I went and measured it at breast height on the uphill side. It measured just over 8 feet in diameter. It was a gnarly solid tree.

If anybody knows of a redwood tree or old growth redwood stump north of here let me know.

We met and spoke near the beginning of your redwood transect, just north of Limekiln State Park. We exchanged business cards while I was photographing condors. thought you might enjoy one of the photos and a favorite of mine from Hare Creek.

I remember you for sure. I am interested to know more about the condors nesting in the redwoods. That file you put up didn't work. If you want it to appear on the map it has to be in kml unzipped.

There are few things more enjoyable than hiking the redwoods. Several places as nice - but none really better.

I've got photos of a few redwoods that you may not have encountered on your adventure - check the albums stemming from this page:

Largest Redwood: Atlas Grove / Grove of Titans

Largest among the known redwoods.

Here is one photo from my album. This is the Del Norte Titan. 3rd largest known redwood of those disclosed by name..

Anything new on this transect? Saw a bit on Panaramio.com

Ever put together any photo photostitches big enough to load up on Gigapan.com ?? That's like 50 megs minimum.

I've been out exploring quite a bit myself. May go looking for the bottle shown in Jedediah Smith redwoods just for a reason to head up the east fork of Clark's Creek.

I've enjoyed reading your article in this month's National Geographic. Great work by you and the others involved. I hope it helps to make a difference.
