Another great catch. ocool

But being a birder I tend to be a bit picky about id's. These birds show the characteristic pattern of gray underwing primaries which identify them as Turkey Vultures. (image from Wikipedia)

Black Vulture for comparison

Thanks Hill. smile I thought all turkey vultures have red heads and i couldnt see any red on them. Maybe only males have red heads? The description at the Wiki link for black vultures says,
"The bases of the primary feathers are white, producing a white patch on the underside of the wing's edge, which is visible in flight."
So i figured seeing a white edge on the underside of the wings, and no red head, would make them black vultures. But now that i see your 2 comparison pics, the pattern is very different and matches turkey vultures.
I took a chance. grin

Cool birds. These guys are Anhingas and the first image shows them in typical feather drying posture. Unlike ducks and other water fowl, their feathers do not repel water, so they must dry them by extending their wings. The advantage to not having waterproof feathers is that it is much easier for them to submerge and stay that way for long periods.

Thanks Hill. I never heard of Anhingas. Cool looking bird in the wikipedia picture, its too bad the camera couldnt get a better closeup. Here is another new bird sitting on a light pole I came across north of St Petersburg. I didnt have any luck matching a ID to it. Ive been using Wikis List of birds of Florida. I figured its a type of Tern or small Gull, but i didnt see any direct matches. Theres also a gull flying along the road. Theyre so common i wasnt going to post any but since its in the same pic, ill include it. smile

It is most likely a Laughing Gull though reflection of light off the red bill makes it look white in your closeup. There are other possibilities but I don't believe they are as common in Florida.
