Salam Adrian and Syzygy,
I'm a Northern Areas fan as well, and I've been there almost every year since 2001 But I've only been to Hunza once in 2001 and I didn't read/research much because every name and every place was new for me. I was reading a couple of books that mention that Altit and Baltit are villages in Hunza Valley (like Karimabad is the main town in Hunza Valley). The forts also take the name from the villages. In one book they were mentioned as "Mirs' palace at Baltit" or something like that, it was probably later that they were called as "Forts".

I've recently bought this book "Pakistan Trekking Guide" by Isobel and Ben Shaw (a mother-and-son team of trekkers who explored Pakistan in 70's and 80's). The book is very well-written, and the edition I've got is 1993's revision, the only issue is that the prices it mentions have actually been doubled or tripled since then, otherwise, it has some 50+ treks and some 50+ detailed maps of all the Northern Pakistan (from Chitral to Swat and Ishkoman, Yasin to Shimshal and Khunjerab).

Isobel and Ben Shaw have written other books as well, and I guess they'
re as good as this one, but this book is like the "official" trekking guide for Pakistan

Also, I've been placemarking the Northern Pakistan in the last couple of weeks, here's what I've got so far:

I like the Baltit Fort pic, you've placed it in the perfect orientation!! I've got your overlays as well and will use them for more placemarks.

Thanks!

Hi Syzygy,
Thanks for the link, I don't see the word Queetta on any of the threads, probably you meant something else? Queetta is in Balochistan near Afghan border.

Hey syzygy426,
I was browsing the forum again today and found out this post, sorry I couldn't see "Quetta" that day, this is what happens when you're up all night :P (I just searched for "Queetta" on the page and didn't find it). Sorry I can't recognize the place from this picture, I guess it could be anywhere in Quetta, some wall painted white and grey/black with a tree in the background... but I've only been to Quetta once, maybe a native could recognize it...

I'm compiling a collection of good Pakistan posts, this thread has been added to the list, let me know if you find out some other thread that isn't listed there.

I have had a close look at the Nanga Parbat area and the Raikot River is overlying the ridge to the north. You need to carefully re-scale the overlay and register it more accurately. Are you sure the originalmap is WGS84 projection?

Well its gratifying to know that people took an interest in my small contribution. I have not been around for some while, as google earth stopped working on my system for some reason, then several system crashes and a MB /CPU upgrade later, plus work commitments, I have only just got around to reloading the new Google Earth today. I do have other maps of the area, but only having a BW A0 scanner, means that they would be black and white. My colour scanner is asimple desktop A4 job, so it would take a lot of time to do it and could damage the maps, due to folding etc.

If B/W is OK, then I am happy to do it.

Regards

Walter349
