Yeah! Unfortunally Italy is not well covered... Some wonderful cities like Venice and Firenze (and many many others!) are not covered...
The site www.atlanteitaliano.it has a good plugin that permits to view Italy in high definition aero-images... Obviously in 2D and without the wonderful keyhole capabilities....
The site is only in italian, but you can go to the "Cartografia" section.

I traversed the website, reverted back to IE and retraversed the site, installed the ECW plugin, and was asked to login. It did not like an anonymous login. Can you look at the web site and post some login advice for those of us who lack skills in Italian, per favore?

I have been searching for a high altitude or satellite view of my home town (Mola di Bari) for years now and I have FINALLY found it! I can even see my brother's boat business.

I had no problemo at all.

Here are the steps I took:

1) go to http://www.atlanteitaliano.it

2) Click on "Cartografia" on the top of the page

3) Under the "Accesso Libero" click on "Accesso"

4) When the "OK/Cancel" box appears, click "OK"

5) Click on the "Accetto" box

6) When you see a regional map of Italy on the upper left side of the screen, pick a Regione and navigate your way around.

Of course, you will need the plugin.....

It was a great thing if keyhole could use these images to cover all Italy
