A SU-15TM interceptor blew KAL007, a B747-200 out of the sky killing 269 civillians, flew out of here on the 1st September 1983.

Voyska PVO (or PVO Strany until 1981) was the air defense branch of the Soviet military. PVO is short for Protivo-Vozdushnaya Oborona or "Anti-Air Defense."

PVO Strany - Russins don't speak this. (Anti-Air defense of counry ;-))
We are speaking PVO of Russia or simple PVO.

I know this airfield very well and have been there many times. It is used by the locals of Kerch and Bagerovo now, for drag racing and other public events. Most of the buildings and hangars have been either demolished or stripped of anything useful (the locals have not much money and need windows, doors etc to repair their houses or apartments). I was at a drag race and there last year. They were racing Lada's! Great fun!

There is another airport close by. Kerch airport. It is being used for freight planes at the moment and is currently for sale. It is hoped that the buyer will start passenger flights to this part of the Crimea. I hope so too! It would make life a lot easier for me to get there from England!

I hope this information is useful to someone.

Regards, TheWongs.

I've worked around Stryi 1988 and 89.
A few kilometres in north easterly direction we had a construction site of a compressor for natural gas pipelines then.
And I saw the TU160 fliying overhead a few times a week then. They where based at the airfield then. I had a private contact to a family whose son was a pilot on it. Sometime we saw a AWACS Plane.

regards Ron

p.s. who wrote the stupid thing about the Korean Airliner was shot down from a fighter of the stryi airbase? He don't know anything about fighter planes and the distances to the Pacific Ocean from Stry!

Just as an aside, has anyone noticed that at the base outside Tokol, there is (or at least in the picture available in January of 2008) an old North American B-25 Mitchell sitting on a hardstand southwest of the runway?
Now how's THAT for ancient history hardware?
