Open the above placemark to see it in Google Earth, the file is of large size(2.6MB). Keep the terrain layer on, to see 3D view.

Refer: http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/NewImages/images.php3?img_id=17061

The massive earthquake that shattered Pakistan on October 8, 2005, was centered in the steep mountains of Kashmir. Communities already hard to reach because of the treacherous mountain topography were cut off entirely when landslides slumped over roads. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASAs Terra satellite captured this image of one such landslide on October 11, 2005. A large wedge of tan soil stretches more than 2 kilometers in length and over 1 kilometer in width along the side of the mountain in the center of the image. All vegetation, red in this image, is gone in the landslide region. A number of smaller landslides are also visible, mostly along the main river and other valleys.

To know about towns around this place refer this post

Going by the above landslide image, can you spot more such patterns? Post them to this post, may be you can name them after the nearby town names. Any experts on the board to verify them as landslide or not?

I have added road and airport placemarks in this thread, check this post

Hi Sashi,

I just wanted to thank you for putting the overlays, the markers etc. related to the earthquakes in Pakistan.

Whoever and where ever you are, thank you. This helps the people around the globe put this tragedy in a perspective.

This tragedy hits very close to home as my mother's family is from Kashmir and we still have a lot of family & friends unaccounted for.

I believe one of the greatest ancillary benefits of Google Earth and this community is the opportunity to not only learn about different parts of the visible earth, but also to share cultural differences and similarities.

Because of the global nature of the GE community, disasters such as this seem to always affect some part of our community, and when those affected the most contribute to our understanding of the true scope of the event, it brings it home in a manner not possible listening to sound bites and summaries on the evening news.

Sashi- thanks for the effort you've put into your placemarks, overlays and links to additional information to help us recognize the true impact. It is truly appreciated!

I only want to thank Google earth and all others who have contributed towards the relief efforts for the victims of Northern areas of Pakistan. I only request you to provide us with more high resolution images of the affected area so that all the people who are still without shelter and relief good can be helped at priority. I must remind you of the fact that worst is yet to come as winter season has started and snowfall is the affected area is about to start in a week or month time, i pray that all the people who are without shelter are relieved before that. Mind you temprature in these areas falls below 10 to 20 degrees in the winters. Thanx to all the helping people......
