CAVEAT FIRST: Moderators, please NEVER add these placemarks to the community BBS layer

This is probably the craziest set of placemarks I've ever generated.

This file contains more than 10,000 (10,041, to be precise) airports, found in the Global Airport Database and in the DAFIF site database.

The airports are organized by country/region and are colorized according to their type. Only the ICAO codes are shown as labels, for brevity, but more information is available when clicking on the icons.

The difference between this and a previous ICAO list is, that this database doesn't primarily focus on ICAO codes, it is organized in country/region folders and it contains almost twice as many airports, some of which are a lot more precisely located, due to the different data sources used.

2ND CAVEAT:Moving the focus over the United States might explode your computer ! There are simply too many airports, so you need quite a capable machine!

Moderators: All that said, if you feel this is too much to take, or that it is a duplicate of this post (which I don't think it is), feel free to delete it, it was fun for me creating and watching it!

Enjoy!

Edit: Updated to the 0601 DAFIF cycle (Jan. 20, 2006)
Edit: Icon orientation now represents direction of first listed rwy (Jan. 22, 2006)
Edit: Updated to the 0602 DAFIF cycle (Feb. 22, 2006)
Edit: Added magnetic variation to information balloons (Feb. 22, 2006)
Edit: Updated to the 0603 DAFIF cycle (Mar. 19, 2006)
Edit: Updated to the 0605 DAFIF cycle (May 9, 2006)
Edit: Updated to the 0607 DAFIF cycle (July 14, 2006)
Edit: Updated to the 0609 DAFIF cycle (Sep. 2, 2006)

Thx!

Keep watching this thread, I think I will add more data (e.g. runways, ...) to the info.

I was even thinking about generating SIDs/STARs, but I think this would be a job for an (interactive) network link: Click an icon, select [Show STAR], get a polygon with the flightpath. Maybe some day...

I must have gone completely crazy...

I just added Runway info and the DAFIF service remarks to the info balloons. Unfortunately, this tripled the size of the .kmz to about 1.5MB (the embedded .kml is 11MB!).

I also added METAR, TAF and Google search links to the ballons. As these are part of the balloon style, they might only work with GE version 3.0.0693 and above.

So, anyone still interested, please re-download from the first post in this thread.

Amazing, the military 30 years ago would have loved it!
Remember the times when it was forbidde nto take photographs in the neigbourhood of airports? Times ara a changing rapidly.

A suggestion as well: Save the KMZ with all placemarks disabled. This allows the downloader to enable only what they want to see, instead of crashing less able machines.

Any reports about crashes are welcome!

In my experince, it's enough to be a little patient, wait for GE to settle, then uncheck the top placemark. After that you may re-enable the placemarks by country or one by one.

Generating them unchecked is possible, of course, but destroys the 'crazy' effect .

Or maybe not? Here's a quote from the current DAFIF readme.txt available here:
Code:
*** NOTICE: There is an initiative underway to remove all NGA aeronautical products from
the public domain, effective 1 October 2005. This action will not affect DoDAAC
and FedAAC accounts. DoD customers have been notified by NGA's Office of
Military Support and a public notice will be published in the Federal Register.
A POC and a list of frequently asked questions concerning this action can be
found on the aeronautical home pages residing on the NGA websites.

So, who knows, how long we can keep this up to date?

Still, Enjoy!

lol.... our governments STILL don't understand the parable of Pandora's Box. Once something is known or discovered, all the laws and resolutions in the world cannot "undiscover" the information. Good luck with that.
