Long overdue updates to Vietnam US Facilities 121305. This file is called Vietnam US Facilities 063006. It has all the locations from the previous file as well as 40 additional facilities for a total of 408. Dont forget to use Ctrl-F to search for names in this long list.

Now that there is some new great high-resolution imagery, some very interesting features are clearly visible. Most notable are Hill 875 (correct location sent to me by Ernie Camacho thanks) and the US Embassy complex in Saigon (which was recently demolished, leaving its footprint in the grass), which has now been properly located (thanks to Wibbly see thread below).

Which brings up the following question: Does anyone have any ideas on how to post this and have the file open to edits by the public, similar to Wikipedia. Just a thought. I am sure there are lots of other points that I will never find, and I sure dont want to hold this collection back from growing.

Anyways, facilities added include: US Embassy Annex, USO, AFRTS, CMAC, Air America Terminal, Camp Alpha, Phu Lamall, all in Saigon. Cam Lo and Blackhorse Basecamps. Monkey Mountain. Landing Zones Lima Zulu, Chu Pa, Roberts, Mile High, Cider, Swinger, Blackfoot, Alamo, Brillo Pad, Russell, and Katum. Fire Support Bases Gray, Ban Me Thuot, A-5, and A-6. Quang Long, Bac Lieu, Nakhon Phanom, Long Thanh North, and Djamap air facilities. And finally, Special Forces facilities Polie Kleng, Polei Krong, DODO Camp (Paradise Island), Cheo Reo, Buon Ho, Ban Me Thuot, Sledgehammer, Plei Mrong, Phouc Vinh, B-24, SOG FOB Phu Bai, SOG CCN and CCS

I have also included some various other points of interest, mainly notable valleys and hills, though that could end up being an endless job in itself.

Finally, I captured a few infamous non-military locations in central Saigon.

Thanks again to all the veterans who have provided all this information online. Your collections of personal photos and first hand stories provide more insight and understanding of this conflict more so than any history book/movie can. Thank you once again for sharing them publicly.

From second post 12/13/05

OK, updates to Vietnam US Facilities 112805. This file is called Vietnam US Facilities 121305. It has all the locations from the previous file as well as the following additions (in no particular order) for a total of 368 facilities:

-Facilities in areas for Chu Lai, Qui Nhon, Cam Ranh, Na Trang, Tuy Hoa, Vun Tao and and the Australian AOs, and some hospitals.

-The Golf Course, Hon Cong Mountain, Sin City, Duster Hill, Mai Loc, Song Mao, Riverboat South, Camp Horn, Tam Ky Airfield, Frank Doezema Compound (Hue), Tun Taver, Firebase Airborne, Phouc Vinh, Camp Hockmuth, Gia Ray, Xuan Loc,

-FSBs Arsenal, Bradley, McNerney, Tuy Hoa, Barbara,
-LZs Bols, Young, Hardcore, Charlie Brown, Goat, Flexer, Colt, Sparrow Knob, Smith, Cunningham, Razor, Erskine, Shiloh, Sheryl
-Hills 10, 14, 34, 55, 69, 110, 327, 8 Inch,
-Pump Stations 6, 9, 9, 10 on Hwy19
-Repositioned Blackhawk, Ripcord, Rakkasan (correct spelling this time)
-Added some new links to show maps
Also, 3 notes:
1) I want stress again how impossible this task would be without the material posted by veterans on the web. Everything you see here is simply a translation of that material into a Google Earth format. So, my thanks once again to everyone who has contributed their maps, photos and stories. Simply click on the links from each placemark to see where the location data came from.
2) This is by no means a complete (or completely accurate) list of sites, only my summary of material posted on the Internet.
3) I have reduced the font size from what I had in the previous file. I recommend you set your default typestyle (tools-options-view-Fonts-Primary3DFont) to Arial BoldItalic 20pt.
Hopefully, more updates to follow
Daniel

OK, first post, so hopefully this works.

Please find attached 289 placemarks of US facilities in Vietnam that were constructed sometime between '65 and '72. Thanks to all the veterans out there in cyberland who have posted their photos, maps and stories. It was with these that I was able to nail down, to within tens of feet, the locations of these places. I hope that you, the user, will click on the links to see where I received the information for the placemarks, and to read the notes, stories and photos uploaded by American veterans of the Vietnam War.

I have also included a small number of locations of significant fighting, but only because I came across some info on them and figured Id include them. I am sure there are thousands more of these points to add.

I have been working on this in the evenings for the past 2 months, and I will be hopefully be updating this file periodically. If anyone finds any errors or additions, please post them.

Daniel

Hi Karl,

Sorry for not responding sooner. I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but just to clarify, if you click on most of the placemarks once youve opened the file, you should be able to find links to maps and photos and from there links to the home pages from where these images came from. In some cases I accidentally only left a link directly to a map or photo that had no link to a home page. In a few I forgot to add a link. I will try to clean these links up in the future.

Also, I just updated and posted a new file with all the original points plus almost a hundred addition points and more links.

Hope this helps,

Daniel

I have no idea what UBBcode and UTF-8 is.
I built a website dedicated to LZ Buff/Stinsen.
Can I link My website to your LZ Buff?

Fantastic work!

I've noticed a couple of problems with the HCMC (Saigon) locations.

Perhaps this is a problem with the source. I note that the map which is referenced from the placemark ( http://www.rjsmith.com/Saigon_North_and_South_Complete.html ) includes an orange arrow at the same, incorrect location as your US Embassy placemark, and no marks at either the pre-1967 or post-1967 embassy sites.

Attached are the correct locations for the US Embassy until 1967, the US Embassy from 1967-1975, and the current US Consulate-General (not for your historical set, but people may find it interesting).

The US Embassy was relocated in 1967 after it was deemed unsafe.

There are some pictures of the old embassy here (including some pictures of a bomb attack):
http://www.angelfire.com/ny2/SGTFATS/DIFWAR2.html

Somewhat ironically the new Embassy became a battleground just a couple of months later during Tet in 1968.

Cheers and thanks,
Wibbly

Further to my last post, here's a 1970 photo of the US Embassy building which was used from 1967-1975 , and which stood on the site until 1998.

The foundations of the building can still be seen inside the compound using Google Earth.
