EDIT: Because it is quite annoying to open one by one placemark, I have decided to stack them together and update every time I have new addition. So in the first post (here) I will put the only file with all placemarks, and present in more detail about each placemark in other posts. So far I posted: Bobovac, Travnik, Pocitelj, Old Bridge in Mostar, Kravice and Pliva waterfalls, Sarajevo, Gradina, Umoljani, Studeni potok, Lukomir, Rakitnica and Neretva canjons, and two Skakavac waterfalls (which are not in the placemark, I'll add them later) besides that, all have been updated, and now placemarks have slideshows instead of only one picture. The slideshows and baloon appearence don't work in google maps for some reason. :s Green placemarks represent nature. Red placemarks represent architecture, culture, and people. ________________________________________________________ well, here I will post places from Bosnia together with pictures and info on that place, hope u like it This is waterfall on Pliva river in Jajce, old Bosnian city, which used to be capital in mieval Bosnian Kingdom, before falling under Ottoman empire. The waterfall is around 20m high. Its located in center of the city. The Pliva waterfall falls into Vrbas river. Pliva is only river in the world that finishes by waterfall in the center of city.

OLD BRIDGE IN MOSATAR The single-arched Stari Most ("Old Bridge") in Mostar was erected in 1566 by architect Mimar Hajruddin at the height of the Ottoman Empire. It not only connected the city physically but, by the 20th century, had come to symbolize the coming together of many nationalities and ethnicities. On July 23, 2004, festivities with music, dancing, and international guests celebrated the completed restoration of the landmark bridge to its original form. This reconstruction project is one piece of a larger effort to restore the historic district of Mostar after its devastation by bombing. Flanked by two fortified towers, the Halebija Tower on the right bank and the Tara Tower on the left, the new bridge, like its predecessor, has a single hump-backed arch 13 feet (four meters) wide, 100 feet (30 meters) long, and 65 feet (20 meters) high at its center. Before the Ottoman conquest of Bosnia, Mostar had been a small hamlet situated at a strategic crossing of the Neretva River. The Stari Most was built in the Ottoman period, during the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent, to replace a precarious wooden suspension bridge that had spanned the river. The stone bridge secured Mostar's primacy as the capital of Herzegovina and transformed Mostar from a quiet settlement into a cosmopolitan crossroads. The city's rich architecture, further developed during the Hapsburg period, has been a draw for travelers to this day. On November 9, 1993, the bridge's spring line was hit by a Croatian tank shell and the already battle-damaged structure fell into the river. The war also devastated much of the city's architectural and social fabric and plunged it into decline. Later in the decade, as wartime tensions slowly faded, local and international energy went into new commercial and civic projects. A few months ago, The Old Bridge was put in UNESCO World Heritage.

KRAVICE WATERFALLS Located in south-west Hezegovina, on river Trebizat, Kravice falls are one of most beautiful waterfalls in whole country. Falls are very popular turistc destination, especially on summer. River created half circle, from which water falls, and hight varies, from 1 to 25 meters. At the bottom, falls created shallow lake, which gets pretty warm at summer, and is great for refreshing in warm Herzegovinian summer.

POCITELJ The Turkish world traveler Evliya Celebi passed through Pocitelj in 1664; here are some translated excerpts from his travel account. [About the town's principal mosque, built by Hadzi Alija in 1563]: "There is a tall cypress tree in its courtyard. This shining mosque was erected by a forebear of our lord Ibrahim Aga. Alongside the town walls, beside the water, his honored brother built a public kitchen (imaret) which distributes free bread and soup to needy inhabitants day and night. On Thursday evenings, it distributes spiced meat and savory and sweet rice dishes. The imaret will remain thus as long as it is the will of God ... In the town, there is an elementary school (mekteb). Later, our lord Ibrahim built a secondary theological school (medresa) and also sent craftsmen to build public baths (hammam) and an inn for travelers (han) ... The houses of the town are built one above the other, facing west towards the river. There is an abundance of walnut trees here. Since the climate is mild, fruit grows better here than in other towns." Evliya also mentions that Ibrahim built a clock tower whose bell "heavier and clearer than any other in Bosnia and Herzegovina" was, according to legend, brought from Crete. For many years the bell tolled the hours for Pocitelj and in calm weather could be heard in Capljina and Gabela, just as the voice of the muezzin from the Pocitelj minaret "resounded from the stone into the far distance." Pocitelj was of no military or political importance, so it was not attacked early; but it was important psychologically, it seems: after most of the fighting in war was over, the Croat forces shot it up, and coldly destroyed the mosque, dynamiting its minaret, and they blew up the lovely old Turkish covered market, just so we couldn't enjoy it any more. It wasn't theirs, so nobody could have it. Now, mosque and market are reconstructed, but most of old houses are still just a pile of rock.

BOSNIAN PYRAMID OF SUN A sensational discovery of "the first European pyramid" in the central town of Visoko, about 20 miles north of Sarajevo. Excavations at a hill site above the town have been going on for several months and initial analyses "have confirmed the original claim that this is Europe's first pyramid and a monumental building, similar in dimensions to the Egyptian pyramids." The artefact is said to be around 10,000 years old. "The pyramid is 100 metres high and there is evidence that it contains rooms and a monumental causeway ... The plateau is built of stone blocks, which indicates the presence at the time of a highly developed civilisation," Dnevni Avaz writes further. "Archaeological excavations near the surface have uncovered a part of a wall and fragments of steps,"... Also its thought that neighbouring hill of Križ, which is also pyramid shaped, that its, smaller,. "pyramid of moon". pyramid of sun pyramid of moon MORE TO COME... Removed duplicate placemark. Original placemark and post can be found HERE. Please remember to search the forum and enable all of your Community layers.

TRAVNIK Travnik is situated in the narrow valley of the Lasva River which borders the Vlasic mountains in the north and the Vilenica mountains to the south. Travnik is a city with a turbulent history. In the Middle Ages, the city was part of the Bosnian state, a period of which the well preserved historic city centre bears elaborate witness. During the Turkish occupation of the Balkans, for 150 years, Travnik became the residence of the Vezirs, the governors of the sultans. The city developed into the most important centre of trade and crafts, becoming the first diplomatic centre of Bosnia. To this day, many mosques, Koranic schools and other buildings of the Ottoman era characterise the city. During the Austrian-Hungarian occupation, Travnik developed into an industrial centre. Wood-processing and textile industries flourished and to this day remain the city's most important industries. Located in central Bosnia, Travnik is a nice place to visit. Highlights include the Plava Voda (Blue Water), Stari Grad (oldest part), Osoje (traditional architecture). Travnik is rather small, it takes less than 30 minutes to walk from one part of town to another. You can visit Travnik all year round. Temperatures are great - no overheating, no winter-cold. A 30-minute drive will bring you to the Mt. Vlasic (2000meters)- great for hiking mountain sports.

Did you know that Bosnia dosn't seem to exist in the GooglEarth search engine? I read an article today about a pyramid being uncovered at Visoko; wanted to see the terrain. Everything I tried (Visoko, Bosnia; Sarajevo, Bosnia; Bosnia-Herzegovina; and so on) kept returned the error message "not found". Amusingly, if I just put Sarajevo in, it goes to a suburb of Kansas City. I finally told it to go to Serbia; that worked. I manually tracked over to the area I wanted.
