Thanks Frank, that is a new one. I've searched John Wayne before because one of the 4 operational Starships is supposed to be based there. I guess the new imagery, and you, finally caught up with it. I'm waiting for the day we find Burt Rutan's up in Mojave.

We know Hill's love of those pesky DC3's but the "Starship" .....is in a different category....there is carbs and then there is steak....do not be confused

Aye, AzT, Steak's fine, but if you've got 60 years of hard work to do, you need carbs for the long burn!

Cheers

Adding a little info...this Starship is parked on the private ramp for the family that owns (owned?) Worth Sporting Goods, which had manufacturing facilities in Tullahoma and in the Caribbean. I'm not sure if it belonged to the family or company, but it's worth noting that the large square white hangar and the smaller building just to the south make up the Staggerwing Museum, dedicated to the Beech Staggerwing (Tullahoma hosts the annual Staggerwing Convention). It's a great museum for aviation fans. The presence of a Starship there may be coincidence, but it's a possible connection.

Pardon my ignorance in things that fly (I'm not a total heathen - I do have an RC helicopter), but what is the significance of the planes to the south painted dark red, and the ones painted gold/yellow? Are those simply carrier paint jobs?

Most of the ones with the flashy paint jobs were from Braniff.

Each update finds fewer and fewer of these magnificent planes in the Google Earth sphere. And these may in reality be gone to the grinder ( being composite material they are not recyclable) since Ge images are often a few years old. Some have made it to museums and Burt Rutan still flies his, as far as I know. But most go to Pinal and then are gone for good. But five locations remain and one or more of the airworthy ones may show up somewhere else on GE someday.
