I don't know 'why?' That on its own is no reason to think ANYthing.

You might ask why people make those crop circles. People make them so other people will talk about them (and please note I am not saying that 'crop circles could really be made by aliens')

Well... now someone's reminded me that the photo is OBLIQUE, that explains why the leading edges appear more swept than the trailing edges.

But the height thing? I didn't say they flew low on Ops (for god's sake, you'd want to be as high up as possible, wouldn't you?), but that the operational ceiling of the plane was lower than some USAAF planes - and someone checked, and I was right (at least about the B17).

Well that IS useful... I've also found a bunch of planes (gliders, cessna types, something with pink stripes on the wings) flying about over Gamlingay, Bedfordshire (about 10 miles south of Huntingdon)... some of them 'have' shadows, some of them don't... and now I've got a better idea of how far away the shadows CAN be even at the modest altitude this Lancaster would have been flying at, I can easily see how it could get lost.

Thanks for answering, instead of just assuming I'm a 'conspiracy theorist'.

OK I live in the area and I've been doing some thinking:

1) there IS a shadow, it outlines the <north> and <east> sides of the plane. You know this is the shadow as that is where all the other shadows point. How can the shadow be so close, surely that's too low? I hear you ask...

2) As I say, I live in the area. Southeast (nr Cambridge) you will find Duxford, the biggest museum for WWII planes in england. Some of these are there for exhibitions, and travel back to the rest (north) of England. That involves flying over the wonderfully flat huntingdonshire, which they love to do VERY low. I guess with so many airfields in the area, theyr showing off to their pilot friends

*I* hadn't seen it before - love it - most amazing thing I have seen on Google Earth! There's only one Lancaster Bomber flying in the UK - what are the chances?!

Hi, Fencemaster, welcome to GE.

You're right - this has to be my all-time favourite Aircraft in Flight found in GE.

Here she is, courtesy of Gareth Horne, and Airliners.net:

Although, for uniqueness, you might also take a look at the DC-3 in flight over Greek waters, or the Starfighter displaying at Cold Lake ...

My only disappointment with the Lanc was that the Spitfire and the Hurricane weren't keeping her company.

I'm lucky enough to live near RAF Cottesmore in Rutland. Most weekends in summer we see one or another of the Battle of Britain Flight aircraft going over...

Cheers

Frank

Astonishing. Truly astonishing!

And there was I, pleased that I'd found & identified the dirigible-ettefloating above the Notcutts Garden Centre at TW18 2SF.

I really think those guys at Google are trying to play tricks on us, shure you will see airplanes on the pictures as well as you can see cars.
But on a lovely sunny day you should be able to see a shadow cast by the Lancaster!
The sun is shining, you can see that by the shadows cast by tall objects like trees. But I can't find any shadow that looks like an Avro Lancaster.
If anyone can, please share it with the rest.
