Giant sequoias were first brought into cultivation in 1853 by Scotsman John D. Matthew, who collected a small quantity in the Calaveras Grove, arriving with it in Scotland in August 1853 (Mitchell 1996). A much larger shipment of seed collected (also in the Calaveras Grove) by William Lobb, acting for the Veitch Nursery, arrived in England in December 1853. It was located near Eresburg castle, Paderborn, and was destroyed by Charlemagne in 772.A Germanic god Irmin based on the name Irminsul and the tribal name Herminones is sometimes postulated as the war god of the Saxons. The Old Norse form of Irmin was Jrmun and interestingly, just like Ygg, It was one of the names of Odin Yggdrasil was the yew or ash tree from which Odin sacrificed himself, and which connected heaven and earth. It appears, thus, that Irminsul may have represented a World tree corresponding to Yggdrasil among the Saxon tribes of Germany.REFERENCE:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irminsul ------------------------ ------------------------

---------- The tree has been visited by various experts over the years. The earliest expert record is from 1650 when John Aubrey measured the tree as 30ft 5 in. at 5 ft up (the same as a parish record of 1630). The Gardeners Chronicle of 1874 recorded 30ft 9in at the same height. When Allen Meredith went in 1984 he measured 31ft 6in. The tree has put on 13 inches (33cm) girth in 354 years; thats less than one millimetre a year.REFERENCE:http://www.woodland-trust.org.uk/ -------------------------------------------

The "Mendocino Tree" did not rule for tallest. The current tallest tree is the "Stratosphere Giant" which, at 369.5 feet, seems to have been the tallest all along. The "Giant" is located in the Rockefeller Forest of Humboldt Redwoods SP. Where exactly? That is a well-kept secret. The good news? .All of these trees have been on protected parkland.. It stands 367 feet 6 inches, or five stories higher than the Statue of Liberty. reference:www.cspra.com/wave04/tree.html ----------------------
