This placemark-collection probably does not work properly in Google Maps.

Hello
Here, at the Google Earth Community I found some white horses and I was very fascinated. So I looked for some more white horses, but most of the places where these can be found are in a low resolutin. Because I could not wait for an Google Earth update, I took some images from Multimap.com and made overlays.

There are 22 horses in the file.

(9 Wiltshire white horses, 8 Non-Wiltshire white horses and 5 white horses outside the UK)

Alton Barnes white horse (1)
Broad Town white horse (1)
Cleadon Hills white horse (2)
Cherhill white horse (1)
Devizes (New) white horse (1)
Folkestone white horse (2)
Hackpen white horse (1)
Heeley Millennium Park white horse (2)
Kilburn white horse (2)
Litlington white horse (2)
Luzley Horse (2)
Marlborough white horse (1)
Mormond white horse (overlay) (2)
Osmington Hill white horse (2)
Pewsey (New) white horse (1)
Uffington white horse (1)
Westbury white horse (1)

Uffington white horse replica, Nicholls, Australia (3) NEW
Uffington white horse replica, Georgia, USA (3) NEW
Ciudad Jurez white horse (Uffington white horse replica) (3)
Bloemfontein white horse (3)
Waimate white horse (3)

(1)=Wiltshire white horses
(2)=Non-Wiltshire white horses
(3)=Non-UK white horses

Example:
Osmington Hill White Horse

[From the Whiltshire White Horses webpage:]

This huge horse was cut in 1808, or possibly a little earlier. A report in The Universal Magazine in 1808 said "An equestrian figure of His Majesty has lately been formed in the chalk on Osmington Hill...". It is the only horse with a rider, representing King George III, and it is one of the only four horses to face right. It is near the village of Osmington, east of Weymouth, and looks out over Weymouth Bay. It was cut into limestone, but is whitened with chalk. Well-maintained, it was last scoured in July 2001.

Both overlays deleted after image-update.

Thank you infiltrator. I decidet to put 2 white giants from UK in this thread. The Cerne Abbas Giant and the Long Man of Wilmington. Both are made as "doubleoverlays" to find the corret place. Both placemarkers contain a photo taken from the ground and a link to a website with infos. Hope you enjoy it. :P

Good story about the Osminbton white horse - it was made to commemorate a king's visit to Weymouth (I forget which king, maybe Mad George) but it was carved riding out of Weymouth, not towards. This upset the king so much he never returned.

Great collection, by the way!

The King was George III (and the rider on the horse is him). The horse did upset the King, but I would have thought that he didn't return due to his ill health, rather than because of the horse.

These are cool - thanks! I did not know that so many of these things have been done comparatively 'recently'. I always thought they were a prehistoric phenomenon. You provide great info and pictures, but my favorite quote from your descriptions was the one about Mr. George Gee, who was steward to Lord Abingdon:
Quote:

One cannot help but wonder if the name G Gee had made him overly sensitive about horses.

An excellent list - there were several I'd not heard of.

The comments about the Weymouth horse are interesting. A little Google research shows that there are many conflicting stories about George III and the horse.:

That he was depicted riding away from Weymouth because that was intended to give him a message about the feelings of certain Weymouth people towards him.

That he had it commissioned to show that he LIKED Weymouth very much.

That he had it commissioned to show that he had grown to DISLIKE Weymouth.

That the figure was intended to honour the king, but that he disliked it and never visited Weymouth again. It appears however, that the figure wan't completed until several months after his last visit, so he could never have seen it. Also it's likely that deteriorating health prevented him returning.

I've always had a sneaking admiration for George III. It's said he was a very forthright and honest man. Little better could be said of a king, or indeed any man.
