For the past month or so, the Drygalski ice tongue - easily visible in lo-res Keyhole - was threatened by the Long Island-sized iceberg known as B15A. Scientists awaited the seemingly inevitable collision, but B15A ran aground in late January, missing the ice tongue by just a few kilometers. The corner of the errant berg's current resting place is visible in the overlay photo, taken 2/21/05.

B15A's journey, from NASA:

More info on the placemark description tab, along with:
NASA Earth Observatory and NASA Life on Earth

"Artistic license" (ok, blatant liberties) were taken in aligning this overlay: due to the angle of the shot and proximity to the south pole - where compassy things get iffy - it's hard to get everything to agree, so I lined up as near as possible to the Keyhole view of the tongue itself. The coast and compass are sacrificed a bit, as well as absolute accuracy to the distance legend. But it looks cool

There aren't many placemarks in Antarctica, but it's ever-changing as this overlay and animation show.

Wow!

That's a hunk of ice! And what a collision! You can see the shock waves carried into the surrounding ice as it cracked up for 50 miles inland! (Can you call it "land"?)

As of today, 8-Mar-2005, the massive 1200 square mile B-15A iceberg is slowly creeping up on the Drygalski Ice Tongue, will it hit or not? Stay tuned!

Attached is an overlay showing the massive B15A iceberg as of April 4, 2005. It's travelled about a third of its length across the tip of the Drygalski ice tongue. They haven't collided as feared (yet).

Here are some thumbnails showing B15A's relatively fast progress. Keep in mind the travelling chunk of ice is the size of Long Island

From the BBC:

Quote:

An iceberg the size of Luxembourg has smashed into another vast slab of ice that juts out from Antarctica.

The 115km-long B-15A iceberg broke off a 5km-long section of the Drygalski ice tongue when it collided with the prominence in the Ross Sea.

The iceberg itself so far appears unaffected by the smash-up.

More of the B-15A iceberg still has to pass by Drygalski, so the ice tongue may be in for even more punishment in the coming days, experts have said.

The European Space Agency's Earth-observation platform Envisat has returned some remarkable images of the collision.

Here's the latest news, from livescience.com:
Quote:

A huge wandering iceberg is tearing up the Antarctic like a slow-moving bull in a frozen China shop.
The roaving destructor, named B-15A, slammed into the Drygalski ice tongue a month ago and broke off at least two city-sized chunks. Now it is poised to strike another feature sticking out from the continent.

One of the extras on the March of the Penguins DVD has some amazing photography of the surface and edges of the B15 iceberg, as well as the ice-chaos at one of the collision spots, which was an emperor penguin area. Seeing it "live & up close" makes this mind boggling event a bit easier to grasp (but not by much) and it also raises serious questions about the effects of global warming on these and other creatures.

It's in the "National Geographic Critter Cam" segment, which has some other very cool stuff as well.
