Aladdin did a great job with his list
here!
But since it's last update in Oct. 2004, UNESCO has added and corrected a lot of their available data. So his version is a little bit outdated by now. UNESCO also changed the links to their pages. So the pictue links on aladdin's placemarks don't work any longer.
A while ago, I wrote a set of scripts that extract data from the UNESCO sites and create an Add-On for NASA's WorldWind. With just minor modifications, these scripts now export GoogleEarth placemarks, and can be used (and changed) to generate new placemarks whenever UNESCO changes their page format again.
So try this out. This is generated code, so the result may not be perfect. Please bear with me! This is my first attempt in KML.
The difference to aladdin's version are the inline images in the pop-up-descriptions and the inclusion of sub-sites (marked as small icons) for sites with multiple locations.
For corrections please contact: wh-support@unesco.org! They have been most helpful for a lot of people in the recent weeks. If you read on in this thread, you'll even find, that they're participating here!. These placemarks are auto-generated, so any changes
not made by UNESCO won't be reflected in future versions!
Please make sure to
turn off the Community layer temporarily, as this will overlay the placemarks with an older version of the list!
All data is copyright
UNESCO Enjoy!
Edit: I did some cleanups (still exploring KML

) and added some workarounds for inconsistent base data. So even sites or sub-sites with errors should now be visible on startup, with a slightly reddish label colour.
Edit: Added custom icons to mark cultural, natural and mixed properties. Added transparency to the labels, to make the view less cluttered. (Oct. 30, 2005).
Edit: Added a 'Wikipedia search' link to the descriptions (Oct. 31, 2005).
Edit: French version available (Nov. 13, 2005).
Edit: Removed remaining HTML tags from labels (Nov. 19, 2005).
Edit: Latest UNESCO data imported (a lot of corrections). Some KML 2.1 features have been integrated. (Mar. 07, 2007)
