The lush greenery of the Lee Valley is one of the best known attractions to the area. The river lazily meanders along the valley toward the estuary. Before settlement, where the river met the harbour was a wet marshland. Seemingly uninhabitable, it was named Corcaigh, the Irish word for a bog. Drainage in the area created dry land, and for a while the marsh's many stream channels between the north and south branches of the river acted as streets, earning the growing town the recognition of "the Venice of the North". Today they are concealed and apart from the winding nature of certain streets, it is easy to forget you are walking on water.
This is my collection of notable landmarks and general places for a visitor to Cork to see. (I have included places like cinemas and shopping centres as a stop-gap until Google add Ireland to their "Local" directories.)
