It really all started while looking at some of my old photographs of the area and trying to locate them using a "birds-eye view", and then also trying to locate some of the landmarks that I remember, like the "ammo hole" at the entrance to the 61 Mech base at Omuthiya, just as you turned off the white road [witpad].
Why that ammo hole is burnt into my memory, I have no idea. It just is.

The rest, as they say, is history....

Thank you for the BRUSH Base info. Very little is known about the boys from BRUSH. Very good info!

Much appreciated.

Thank you all for the great work. It is really strange that in the last few months I have been searching for the old bases on Google Earth. I took part in Ops Askari and was keen to see the old base at Xangongo having spent Christmas (1983) there before the operation started.

Thank you all for the effort

Thanks a million for those that have put in so much into this topic. I was stunned when I went to look at Omuthiya, it was recognisable but not recognisable, that terrible white road we used to run in the early mornings was enough to shove me into nostalgia city. I was there in Bravo Company of Dec '80-' Dec '81 and it was an experience that has never left me. By the looks of it most of the base is gone, where did all the concrete floors go to? the hangers? those terrible toilets? our pool? I have very vivid recollections of parts of that base and one day must try figure it all out on a map. 61 Did have a base in Tsumeb, the post office was there and the admin officer, and also close by is Lake Otjikoto which is where the Germans dumped munitions after WW1 I think. There was also a shooting range called Bloubaan a few k's past Omuthiya. And the next base along the road was Miershoop? I also served in 3SAI, 1 SAI, 11 Commando (Kimberly, Jan Kemp Dorp), 93 Ammunition Depot (Jan kemp) and that crummy ABS Lolathla!

Thanks for the memories guys, I will really enjoy recalling these places and I hope I can somehow contribute (not that I know much about how to go about it yet.)
