Hi ferren7

Thank you for the positive feedback. It is much appreciated.

Each time I think that I can spend some time on adding more info, something comes up and I have to leave it for later. And so the weekends pass...
I will try my best and do some more updates asap.

Cheers

Hi Andrew

Thank you for the positive feedback. It is much appreciated.
I am currently waiting on some "documentation" that will take the topic to the next level. Lots of maps, overlays etc etc

Cheers

Loc: California USA
Miershoop - definitely flattened - I stopped there in 1995 and there was nothing other than the base outer walls.

I seem to recall someone saying that with some bases the SADF even tore up the slabs, whereas other bases were handed over to UNTAG as is. Obviously UNTAG would have only stayed in them a short while - or not!

Oshivello (Dolfyn outer base) flattened already by 1988, I went there on one of my last SWA camps. Perhaps the slabs were there at that stage but we will have to wait for Google Earth to post this overlay in clearer format to actually find it.
Oshivello (Main base) flattened - I saw this area in 1995 and the only thing visible was the bougainvillea on the fencing there (which previously divided the in and out lanes up to the main HQ bldg. My view - what a waste. This could have been used for schools, admin or to house the locals.

Oshigambo - it was left as is when the SADF left, and the locals ran in and stripped it (roofing etc) which I saw in SA newspaper photos. They called it an old Koevoet base in the newspapers, but then I suppose that the locals would have called it a Koevoet base even though the SADF used it mostly later on in the war. On GoogleEarth you can only see the outer base walls now so they must have flattened all structures.

Can any of the old 5 Sigs people, (of which there appear to be 2 on this forum) check this location for correctness please. I am 80% sure it is Blenny, but as the thing was underground it is a bit difficult to nail down. As 20 years and to much alcohol has dulled the old memory.

Hi guys

carlos and engr43sabde:
I'll update the thread with the Blenny placemarks. Thanks for that.
engr43sabde: If you could send me the updated placemark, I'll add it in. Cheers.

Just an update on the Blenny:
The local newspaper, Beeld, reports that the Army and Air Force are at loggerheads over maintaining the Blenny, a nuclear blast-proof bunker next to Army headquarters in Pretoria. The bunker was built in the 80's to house the South African Air Force's command post. It is now used by the Joint Operations staff of the SANDF [it still hosts the Bosveld Air Control Sector].
To date, expenditure to the value of R53.346 million has been spent on emergency repairs to 15 bases and on the repair and maintenance of the SAAF Head Quarters and Blenny Complexes in Pretoria.
They are now fighting over who must pay for the building's maintenance, and as a result the Blenny has reportedly not been maintained for some years and is falling into disrepair. Its foundations are allegedly also moving, the newspaper reported. The building also recently completely failed an occupational health and safety test.

Ai-jaai-jaai...

hmm bad news... about blenny...

BTW Bluplanet, anyone planning to document 5Sig's contribution?

cause very few people know about the "super sluipers"? and what they did.

I had a look at phalaborwa (seems as if the DF antennae have been removed), Louis Trichart, Olifantshoek (no good resolution)
