  • 31 Bn - The Bushmen Battalion [became 201 Bn] - Based at Omega Base
  • 33 Bn - The Eastern Caprivi Battalion [became 701 Bn]
  • 34 Bn - The Karangoland Battalion [became 202 Bn]
  • 101 Bn - The Owamboland Battalion [formerly 35 Bn] - Based at Oshakati and Ondangwa, with conventional units based at numerous other bases. 101 fielded the highly effective Romeo Mike [Reaksie Mag or Reaction Force] units, similar to Koevoet.
  • 36 Bn - Bushman Battalion [became 203 Bn]
  • 37 Bn - The Kaokaland Battalion [became 102 Bn]
  • 41 Bn - Windhoek Battalion [became 911 Bn ] - Based at Oamities.

SWAPOL-COIN / SWAPOL-TIN [South West African Police Counter Insurgency / Suid Wes Afrika Polisie Teen Insurgensie] - more commonly known as KOEVOET - This was a highly effective mobile counterinsurgency unit - HQ was located at Oshakati

SWASPES [South West African Specialist Unit]
A Special Forces unit based at Otavi, SWASPES utilized dogs, horses and motorcycles for tracking down the enemy.

32 Bn - The Buffalo Battalion: "Os Terriveis - The Terrible Ones".
What more can be said about this unit that has not already been said? Their reputation is legendary, not just among friends, but also foe. In their day, they were acknowledged to be the best operational light infantry unit in the world.
RESPECT IS DUE.
Excerpt from the 32 Battalion site:
"32 Battalion was probably the most controversial unit of the SADF and its story virtually the untold story of the Namibian Border War - a war which took place against the back-drop of the Cold War and which was in fact anything but cold in Africa. The battalion, which also became known as the most successful counter insurgency unit of the SADF, was comprised mainly of former FNLA and other anti-communist fighters from Angola who had sworn allegiance to the South African government. Together with their South African officers, these troops forged a formidable battalion that became known as one of the best operational units of the South African Defence Force if not in the world." www.32battalion.net

Another excellent site dedicated to the soldiers of 32 Bn. CLICK HERE

Reconnaissance Regiments - RECCE : South African Special Forces : We fear naught but God
The RECCE's are legendary. The South African Recce Operators are regarded as some of the best trained Special Forces units in the world. All South African Special Forces Operators are highly qualified in all aspects of Land, Airborne and Seaborne skills, tactics, operations and deployments; and are able to and have Operated in virtually all possible terrain and climatic conditions. During the Angolan war, 95% of all Special Forces operations were carried out over distances of anything from 10 km to 2000 km behind enemy lines.

The ParaBats - South African Parachute Battalions
  • 1 Parachute Battalion
  • 44 Parachute Battalion

5 Sig - Consisted of 511, 512 and 513 TP. - An Elite regiment that remained secretive despite the action they saw in Angola.
BRUSH - Bush Reconaissance Unit Signal HQ [511 TP]

61 Mechanised Battalion Group - Mobilitate Vincere
"61 Mechanised Battalion Group is probably the only unit in the SADF that has been publicly praised by the Cubans."

Very good information.

61 mech batt also had a base at Tsumeb SWA/Namibia.

SWASPES had a base in Otavi (60 kilometers South of Tsumeb)

Battleschool was based in Otjiwarongo. (10 kilometers to the east of the town)

Special Force training was held at a base on the farm of Otjadachi (40 kilometers West of Otjiwaronga)

There was also a Bushman tracker base at Tsintsabis (60 - 80 kilometers North of Tsumeb.)

I served during 1974 - through 1989 and was then transferred to South Africa.

Good day,

I see and appreciate your updating the map of SWA / Namibia.

There were many smaller strategic bases covering the Northern parts of SWA.

One that comes to mind was at Fort Namutomi (sp) situated in the Estosha game reserve. Used by the Police units and some military "strike and reaction" force units.

Terrorists were sometimes known to have used the Etosha game reserve as a "safe" passage port to cross seeking refuge further South wards.

The Otavi mountain pass was a reasonably big "kill" zone during the 1979 - 1984 era. There was a water spring (used by a farmer for watering his cattle) that was good water - ice cold - no matter the external heat of day.

We and our opponents frequented the spring simply because it was good water - not hot and brackish.

The Otavi meat packing factory was a known haunt of so called "freedom fighters".

Just a FYI - and keep up the project.

Regards

Good day.

Some further recall:

Okahandja (sp) also had a Battle school - mainly SWATF with SA military support (Instructor wise).

Otjiwarongo was also the HQ for sector 30 (SWATF)

Between Otavi and Grootfontein, there was a covert base - which I believe was used by the National Intelligence / Secret Police service.

Regards.

Will write more upon memory recall.

Excellent post!

Keep up the great work!

It is really nice to see where all these places are and to re-visit those that are relevant to our military service!

Regards,

Clint

Thank you Clint

I'm hoping that it will give those that are interested a pretty good overview of where it all happened.
And for those that were there, well, maybe just some quiet reminiscence and remembrance...

With other members now starting to submit information as well [thanks to them], I'll try my best to make it as informative and complete as possible.

Take care
