This post contains a collection of historic maps for the southwest United States. I will continue to add more maps as I have time. Most of the maps are historical topographic maps, but will also be adding some historical aerial photos, geologic maps, etc. The KMZ attached to this post will automatically update so you don't have to keep redownloading it from this post.

I have set up a small website with more details on this project as well as instructions and screenshots. Please go to

Google Earth Map Archive

for more information.

Please let me know if there are any problems or suggestions.

Matt

You might want to check if a local college or university would host these images.

Excellent work!

As a denizen of Southern California, I really appreciate the great job you did here. Thanks - and welcome. (BTW 15 degree series folder seems to be empty)

For those of you back east, I've received permission to include maps from the University of New Hampshire online collection (http://docs.unh.edu/nhtopos/nhtopos.htm)

Starting with Boston and will move on to other major cities as I have time. There are a few maps from Boston area already set up for Google Earth on my server. Next time you start GE you should see some folders that have "(New England)" at the end. That's where these will show up.

Cheers

Matt

For those of you still following along, I added about 20 more historic topo maps tonight. Mostly 15" maps in California. I've got about 60 more 15" California maps to add, and should have them done in next week or so. Then will probably start on 7 1/2" maps historic maps for Southern California.

Also, I recently found a source for a bunch of aerial photos for Southern California from 1920s - 1940s (Fairchild Collection). Might try to add some of those.

Still working on these. So far I have finished just about all of the 60 minute, 30 minute and 15 minute maps I have for California.

Tonight I started reworking the historical topo maps for Los Angeles California area. The original versions of the maps I did for this area did not correctly line up with the ground in Google Earth. Now they do.

Also, I made some changes to the interface starting with the Los Angeles Maps. Hopefully be a little easier to navigate, especially when there are many different years of the same map. Eventually, I will go back and update the others with this new format.

Also, I thought I would try making GeoTIFFs of the full map with the collar available for download. You can download these from a link in the individual map descriptions. The GeoTIFFs can't be used by Google Earth, but may be usefull for some people with other GIS software. If there is a desire for these, I may go back and upload GeoTIFFs for the other maps I've done.

As always, you don't need to redownload the KMZ file attached to this post. new maps should show up automatically.
