The long white stright line that you see at the center of this view is the skeleton of a big blue whale that washed ashore on a beach to the north of Santa Cruz, California. The skeleton is 86 feet long, and the actual body of the whale was more than 100 feet long. This is the largest exhibited skeleton on the planet. I saw it, it is HUGE... Just imagine two greyhound busses glued together!!... The head of the whale is the size of a minivan and the chest could easily contain two SUV!!! Just to give you an idea.

The body is exhibited at the entrance of the Seymour Center at Long Marine Lab, North of Santa Cruz.

How very cool, FF;

Seems to have quite a history too, I mean for a skeleton!

Any pictures on the web?

First ever post here. The whale is also visible in this view from one of our favorite websites - californiacoastline.org.

This link should work.....

http://www.californiacoastline.org/cgi-bin/image.cgi?image=6553&mode=sequential&flags=1

but if not, it's image # 6553 or searchable by keyword "long marine lab"

Welcome hangglide,

Look at the date of the original post and the replies. In two and a half years, the imagery has probably changed more than once in this part of the world. Just one of the little things to know that can make for a more enjoyable experience at GE. This thread will be moved to the archive thread.

This is a great example of why it's good to move things to the archive instead of deleting them outright. The image is brilliant now and I agree with Felippo a really great find.
