Hello. The position of the placemark if wrong.

the correct Postion for Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas is:

1029'26.64"N
6653'26.45"W

that is the real position of the center of Ciudad Universitaria (Aula Magna)

If someone needs more information, send me a e-mail.

Currently, there are no updates possible, as the UNESCO pages are broken at this moment. Seems like their 'multiple location' lists aren't working.

http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/722/multiple=1&unique_number=722 , for example, shows - nothing, as does http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/678/multiple=1&unique_number=678 and most of the rest. As long as this is not fixed, only the main locations would be visible as placemarks, and that's not really what I want. If somebody sees the lists coming back before I do, just post here or PM me.

So, we have to continue using the current version for a while.

Nonetheless, Enjoy!

Just imported the latest data from UNESCO! Please re-download the placemark file from the first post in this thread.

OK, the 'multiple locations' are back up, I've just created a new version.
The update includes mostly name corrections and some corrected coordinates.

And, the Elephanta Cave still hasn't been corrected

Enjoy!

I just re-created the placemarks with custom icons, to mark the differences between the three UNESCO-categories (cultural, natural and mixed properties).

I also added transparancy to the label text, so the map looks a little bit less cluttered over areas with a lot of sites.

Please re-downlad the placemarks from the first post in this thread.

Enjoy!

The World Heritage List and official web site (whc.unesco.org) is maintained by the World Heritage Centre, a part of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Oranization (UNESCO).

Coordinates on the World Heritage web site -- unless we are informed otherwise -- are taken from official information provided by the national authorities in the country where the site is located.

Some of this information is very old -- and very little of it conforms to the current standard of WGS84. Sometimes this is obvious, and we make adjustments to correct the errors; more often than not, however, our accuracy is limited by the resolution of the map software (or the Google Earth image).

Google Earth has now made it much easier to verify coordinates -- but we cannot do it all at once! Nor do we have a person dedicated to checking all 812 locations. Readers of this post who spot errors in coordinates provided by the web site are urged to write us with this information and we will endeavor to correct these problems as soon as possible.

Hear! Hear!

Thanks a lot for your support! You're doing a great job on your website! Very simple, very clear!
But, if you got the data in machine-readable format (other than HTML) too, just send me a personal mail !

I just added 'Wikipedia search' links to the descriptions. They're not always working perfectly, as I'm just using the site's name for searching, but it's a start.

I also changed the icons and labels, so that they become opaque, when hover over them with the mouse. This makes them a lot easier to read.

Please re-downlad the placemarks from the first post in this thread.

Enjoy!

Good news: I just got word from Peter Stott of the World Heritage Center:

Quote:

I have in the last 24 hours changed the locations of about 2 dozen sites based on comments I have read in the BBS (and of course, confirmation from paper maps in our files). And there are more to come.

So, folks, be prepared! As a start, I just imported the latest data from UNESCO! Please re-download the placemark file from the first post in this thread.

There have been a lot of corrections. As far as I saw, every topic mentioned in this and alladin's thread has been covered! Watch for coming updates in the first post in this thread.

Remember to direct any further correction requests directly to wh-support@unesco.org.

And, yes, this time, the Elephanta Cave has been corrected !

Enjoy!
