I am not able to load the file parcels.shp at the following site into Google Earth

http://www.ci.fitchburg.ma.us/ftp/shape_files/

I recently bought the Pro version and import and print modules specifically to have the city of Fitchburgs parcels loaded in Google Earth.

I have no way of supplying the .prj file that GE asks for when I try to import parcels.shp. The zip file at the above-mentioned site only has three files, 'parcels.shp', 'parcels.shx', and 'parcels.dbf'. I use these all the time in ArcExplorer.

Is there a guru out there that has some sort of workaround?

I noticed on Sketchup's forum that GE and Sup are able to talk to each other now, so I'll be exloring this as an option (albeit, a clumsy one)...

Thanks for any info / help that can be provided,

Darin

Darin,

This is a hard problem. ESRI's tools can create these files for you when the .shp files are generated, but if the user doesn't do this and then just supplies the information in the README.txt, you need ESRI to actually read the files. Here is ESRI's answer for manually creating:

I think your best bet is to find some other shp file that is in the same projection and copy its .prj file. That may work.

Here is the prj file for the Fitchburg data. The folks serving this data really should provide this online!

To both of you,

Thank you very much!

You've made my day. I was thinking that GE was a big let-down for me but now, with the info and file provided, it's able to do exactly what I was hoping it could do.

After getting used to Sketchup's forum it's great to see that Google Earth has an active, helpful community, also.

Once again, thanks,

Darin
