Windfarms in Scotland. Separate folders contain operational, proposed approved and rejected windfarms.
Many windfarms have individual turbine markers with height attribute set to the actual height of the turbines. Double-clicking on the folder containing the individual turbines may fly to a 3D view if I remembered to make one. You can get a good idea which windfarms can be seen from any given point.

If you have access to a digitised OS map you can display contours on top of the GE orography, as in this example
Image produced from the Ordnance Survey Get-a-mapservice. Image reproduced with kind permission of Ordnance Survey

Within the balloons are links to various windfarm information sites - I hope to balance the positive with the negative about wind farm sites, but this is just a taster at the start of this project.

You may wish to add the following link as a network link as I will be updating this placemark on an ongoing basis (by heck it could almost be considered a dynamic data layer!)
Windfarms kmz

Keyhole kmz last updated : 28th July 2009 - many more turbines located from OS Map updates and high res GE images

390 downloads since 17th March 2009

10000 or so before that but counter reset to zero at each change to the file

14th October - Now updated to incorporate all operational and under construction windfarms in Scotland, the windiest country in Europe!

I have created my own windmill icon but I'm not sure if this has been zipped up into the kmz - I would be grateful for any feedback!

This placemark now contains most known planned approved and rejected windfarms as well as the original operational ones.

The details are drawn from a variety of sites including the Gazeteer of Wind Power and Yes2Wind as well as those of the developers, objectioners and local authorities.

Data is being continually updated; I am aware that the Gazeteer is not quite up to date with the latest approvals etc. and will work on these as time permits.

Placemark collection finalised

Right, I have updated this collection to be as accurate as freely information will allow!

All known windfarms, whether operational, approved proposed or rejected windfarms included.

All known turbine locations also marked.

Placemarks are now ordered so that it is easy to switch on and off displays of operational, approved, proposed or rejected windfarms, and also toggle on and off all the individual turbines for all farms in each category at once.

I will try my best to keep up to date with these placemarks, so again I recommend a network link to the data. Let me know of any omissions and I'll get them sorted ASAP!

I came across your posting info on windfarms when I was looking at my own area of North Harris. The dot for the Monan windfarm is in the correct place, but the Eisgein location is incorrect. If you head due east and place it on the other side of the Loch you are on Eisgein ground, which is part of Lewis. The current location suggests that it is in North Harris which is incorrect.

Thanks for the info Labman

When editing the placemark I noticed that the imagery has been updated to hires in that area and I could locate the new turbines.
