Sangli is a major city in Western India 390 km from Mumbai and 700 km from Bangalore. Sangli is known for its turmeric trade, grapes and sugar factories. Sangli is also a major education and healthcare centre.

Sangli is a comparatively new city and well planned. The Municipal Corporation was formed by the merger of three cities Sangli, Miraj & Kupwad of which Sangli is the largest.
Sangli is the largest center for turmeric trade in India. The turmeric powder produced in Sangli is exported to almost all countries of the world. At the Sangli Turmeric Exchange, trades worth billions of rupees take place every day. Sangli also has one of the largest commodity markets in India. The Tasgaon grapes of Sangli are famous all over the world. Apart from this Sangli also has the region�s largest wholesale fruit market. The other products exported from this city are sugar & jaggery.
Sangli-Miraj cities are also well known healthcare center with famous hospitals like Wanless hospital & Kripamayee Mental hospital & Sidhivinayak cancer hospital.
Education
Sangli has some of the best educational institutes in the state. Walchand college of engineering of Sangli is among the best engineering colleges in India. Sangli district has 4 other engineering colleges, 5 management institutes and 2 polytechnics. In all there are over 10 engineering colleges in the region of 50 km. from Sangli city. Sangli also has best English medium schools & a large number of degree colleges, medical college, dental college, law colleges & architecture colleges. In the last decade Sangli has emerged as a major education city in Maharashtra.
Sangli a major railway junction
The city is a major railway junction with 2 major railway stations having computerized reservation centers. Miraj junction railway station is one of the busiest railway junction in the country connecting the South Central railway to the Central, Western, Northern & Southern railways.
Sangli is connected to all major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Agra, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Goa, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, etc. by direct express trains.

Public Transportation
Sangli is a well-planned city with broad roads. Sangli-Miraj road is the broadest road in the city with a six-lane traffic. The Municipal Corporation has developed a number of 100 feet wide roads in the city, which have helped to reduce the traffic on the main roads. MSRTC runs city bus service in Sangli-Miraj twin cities and nearby circle of about 20 km. Autorickshaws are found in plenty in the city.

Sangli-Miraj cities have about 13 theatres which screen Hindi, Marathi & English movies.
