UPDATE:
BBC video clips added to the 'Introduction' placemark.
They should open in a separate Real Player application.
(users of Internet Explorer will also have to contend with another browser window openning to a dead link. Just close it and life goes on. )

Several members of Endurance's crew will be attempting the first circumnavigation of James Ross Island soon. I think they were dropped off at their base camp on 11 January.

2/2: HMS Endurance responds to distress call from cruiseship grounded at Neptune's Bellows, Deception Island

The first placemark in the 'Deployment Photo Gallery' folder shows Endurance's crew as they conduct rescue and recovery operations.

Luckily it seems that a major oil spill has been averted.

**Attempted circumnavigation of James Ross Island by kayak has been aborted due to poor ice conditions. The team is now attempting Vega Island to the north. The placemarks in the 'Endurance Kayak' folder are from their blog.

Noisette alerted me to this post. What excellent work! Very thorough with great links for further information and well crafted overlays.
Thanks again

Thank, Heamit. I have some work to do on the 'Endurance Kayak' section. Either I'm mixing up some of the placemarks or there are more than one team of kayakers going in different directions around Vega Island. Also I haven't been able to get more of the ship's positions so the instances of the Linestring crossing landmasses is starting to get out of control. I'll probably create a Region to fade the Linestring to completely transparent as one zooms closer to the Antarctic Peninsula.

Endurance has stopped in Punta Arenas, Chile. There are lots of brightly colored buildings in this town which are plainly visible in GE. It reminds me of some towns in Portugal where people paint their homes using the cheapest paint they can get.

The visitandlearn website link for this placemark is kind of interesting. They keep mixing up which side of the Andes Argentina and Chile are on. Maybe they had their map upside-down?

That is nice !

We are also doing something with a boat:

http://www.earthrace.net

Maybe it would be possible to start something like this on our endeavour as well ?

It was presented with Al Gore during the WorldBioFuelMarkets conference and fair in march 2007.

Thanks,

for EU Earthrace event team,

What a small world! The Endurance's former captain, Nick Lambert transfered to the HMS Cornwall in the Persian Gulf. Fifteen Royal Marines from the Cornwall were recently taken captive by Iran. Dodging icebergs and a hostile navy half a world away in the space of a month. What a job!
