Mars Is Warming, NASA Scientists Report

Data coincide with increasing solar output

The planet Mars is undergoing significant global warming, new data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) show, lending support to many climatologists' claims that the Earth's modest warming during the past century is due primarily to a recent upsurge in solar energy.

Martian Ice Shrinking Dramatically

According to a September 20 NASA news release, "for three Mars summers in a row, deposits of frozen carbon dioxide near Mars' south pole have shrunk from the previous year's size, suggesting a climate change in progress." Because a Martian year is approximately twice as long as an Earth year, the shrinking of the Martian polar ice cap has been ongoing for at least six Earth years.

The shrinking is substantial. According to Michael Malin, principal investigator for the Mars Orbiter Camera, the polar ice cap is shrinking at "a prodigious rate."

"The images, documenting changes from 1999 to 2005, suggest the climate on Mars is presently warmer, and perhaps getting warmer still, than it was several decades or centuries ago," reported Yahoo News on September 20.

I don't know if anyone else has tried making a global super overlay for google earth yet but I've found at least for google earth 4 it's neccesary to get the full resolution of an image of high detail.

Well here's pics of my first attempt. The total map is 16384x8192. Making it the highest detail overlay of mars that I know of for google earth at approximately 46pixels/degree and a full 16k detail this map was taken from the M46 map for celestia.

I would gladly share it but currently I can't figure out how to get a super-overlay to work in a kmz. And it is also a huge amount of data in png format it totals about 186mb.

Hah wouldn't you know it I wrote a python script to do all the kml for this thing and now I find out Google already did it.

Yep, this is now possible with the new KML 2.1. You can learn about the new <Regions> tool here. Also, visit here for more help with <Regions>.

P.S. Don't ask me for help with this; it's way over my head!

I put the Mars MOLA data into a kmz file. Then I made an antipodal version of the same data. This is what you would get if you could see through Mars from one side, and were able to view what was on the other side... Anyway, it is great fun to put one on top of the other and then adjust the transparency of the one on top. The Hellas Basin/Alba Patera fit sure is nice! I wasn't sure if anyone had put this up before, so please forgive me if that is so.

NASA photographs have revealed bright
new deposits seen in two gullies on Mars
that suggest water carried sediment through
them sometime during the past seven years.

"These observations give the strongest
evidence to date that water still flows occasionally
on the surface of Mars," said Michael Meyer, lead
scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program,
Washington.
