Check out the blue hue on this rockface. is it a GE glitch or is it really blue?

Both this square and the one directly north of it have pronounced blue and red areas highlighted. It may be that whoever originally requested the imagery used false color to look for certain minerals. GE does not take the photos itself, but purchases them from several providers. These were taken by Digital Globe in late 2004.

That's an interesting new twist! I had not considered at all the possibility that the images we see may have been highlighted specifically to suit a previous customer's request. That would certainly go some way to explaining a lot of the false color we see - and it makes sense since a lot of these images would come via mineral exploration companies. Many of the strips I have seen in Mongolia, for example, 'just happen' to have a mine or search grids right in the middle of them.

However here's an interesting variation on the theme : explain the pretty road shown in the attached placemark! (same satellite image)

Sometimes there are unintended consequences of tweaking the imagery. That''s why they pay some people the big bucks to interpret the data produced.
