McNaught Now Brightest Comet in Decades

Credit & Copyright: Jens Hackmann

Explanation: The brightest comet in decades is unexpectedly now visible. The most optimistic predictions have Comet McNaught (C/2006 P1) shortly becoming one of the brightest comets of the past century. For the next few days, its short tail and bright coma can be spotted with the unaided eye close to the Sun and near the horizon in both evening and morning skies. This dramatic picture of the comet shining through cloudy skies was taken near sunset on January 7 from Bad Mergentheim, Germany.

I'd stick to Iriduim Flares --much more predictable

Sun sets here in about an Hour and a Half... I'm going out to the Airport to have a good look see around... Hopefully I can get a few photos so long as it is high enough and it is not hazy in the Southern Hemisphere we should see it for a while.... Brightest Comet In 40 Years Seen In NZ

My photos don't really do it justice. I don't have all the flash filters and stuff but I do have a tripod:-)) The first photo is from a series.. At this point it was about a hands width above the horizon Cloud was coming in and there was not much to focus on.

The second three were from a different location.. A bit darker now but being effected by city lights etc.

If it is clear tomorrow night I will go again now I know were to look. From our position it almost followed the path of the setting Sun.
