If anyone would like to contribute additional data (placemarks, etc.) to this, please let me know.

Well I'm sure you are aware of this, but there is a lot of very high res ( ~a few meters) Mars imagery available from MOC . I've had it in my head for a while now to try to put the all the available images into a network link, but I suppose that is easier said than done.

In any case, I do have an old set of MOC 'pic of the day' overlays at this post that I would like to use with your overlays. Unfortunately, they seem to have too low of a draw order to work nicely.

Unfortunately, just discovered this thread...

We've put together a similar SuperOverlay at http://www.marsterritory.com

We've updated our Mars Superoverlay at www.marsterritory.com to include the NASA high-res WMS maps and rottenapple's (another poster) landing sites and geography overlays. Thank you to them both!

3 year old single-core Pentium 4 with a whopping 1 gigabyte of RAM

All thanks to Global Mapper (www.globalmapper.com), which does an amazing job at handling large files.

Since KML 2.1 allows seamless mapping of WMS, including planetary WMS, these full resolution Mars layers now work, without having to download everything:

The USGS Mars Digital Image Model (MDIM)
Mars Global Surveyor MOC Narrow Angle composite (very sparse and very high resolution)
A combined view of the two layers above, with the high resolution insets on top of the global MDIM
The Mars Odyssey Mission THEMIS mosaic

Cool....I guess I won't bother doing the THEMIS using Superoverlays then

By the way, I was thinking about doing the Topographic map of Mars and adding placemarks with crater info. Should I bother, or will you be adding that as WMS also?

Matt
