I've put together this file that has all the countries (and a few dependent territories) throughout the world.

For each country, it shows the flag of the country, and provides links to

    * Books about the country (via Amazon.com)
    * facts from the CIA World Factbook
    * Google search for the country, plus images and news
    * Lonely Planet info about the country
    * the country's entry in the Wikipedia

You can also access the kml file from
http://www.zmarties.com/earth/about/countries.htm

That page will also take you to a web page based version of the same information, with additional links to maps in Virtual Earth, Google Maps, MultiMap, and Yahoo! maps.

That is a great compilation, and very useful. However, for some reason all of the flags show as a grey square on my system, as does your logo (a grey rectangle). What could be the cause of that ?

To keep the download very compact, despite its wealth of data (it comes to just 14.5K) I don't place the flag images (or the logo image) in the kml file itself, but pull them over the Internet as required. (The flag images would add 250K to the download size).

So if you are not seeing the images, it would suggest that Google Earth cannot see the Internet server the images are located on. If you are online and this is still happening, then I'm not sure what could cause that. I've not tried using Google Earth on a machine that needs to use a proxy to connect to the Internet - but I would assume that if Google Earth can fetch the map data it needs, then any kml based layers should also function.

I'll look out for anyone else reporting problems like this.

I have no idea why, but ....

I have an "always on" connection, and do not use a proxy ....

This morning the GIF images did not load, now they DO.

Strange

Thank you.

Great.

Lots of very useful info there.

Any chance of a version that uses amazon.co.uk for UK based explorers?

AMAZING!! Great job! This is possibly the best set of placemarks I've ever seen in this Community.

I've produced a second version of the file attached to the following forum post:

Countries and territories of the world (UK links)

The contents are identical, except the book links now go to amazon.co.uk to do their search, and the Google search, image search and news search also use the UK version of the Google engine.
