The third in a series of "warships lost during World War II".

Photos are included when available (and appropriately credited where necessary).

While there is an abundance of information on most IJN warships, info is lacking concerning the support/auxiliary classes. I've included what I've been able to find on the overlay.

Sources of information are listed (and in most cases, linked to) on each placemark.

I welcome any comments & additional information.

I have been looking of IJS Shinonome off miri, sarawak for nearly 2.5 years.
So far we have not had much luck beyond eliminating a wreck off the river mouth.

We have other targets to check out but they are deep.

However - our ruling out of the Miri river wreck has led somewhere - I have read through PC De Boer's "de luchtstrijd rond borneo" and also Jan visser's site and our conclusions based on this information is that the Army said they attacked a cruiser and the seaplane carrier - they probably did, they say they couldn't see the cruiser after the attack.

Given that shinonome was destroyed the army concluded that they had actually sunk the shinonome and someone in the flight had confused the cruiser with a destroyer.
However the navy flying boats attacked the next day and claimed to have attacked a destroyer and watched her sink and also attacked a merchant vessel.

The army attacked off miri, the navy nearer seria.
It seems likely that the navy actually sunk her given that the river mouth wreck is not shinonome (but possibly a fast fleet oiler's bow called yuhu maru)

Excellent post, Sock!
I didn't realize how many ships the IJN had lost during WWII.
