The "kurgans" (= kumanianhill or in hungarian "kunhalom" or simply mound, "halom") can be found everywhere in the Great Hungarian Plain. Some of them became famous because tales, legends, finds are attached to them. Natural or artificial origin of the "kurgans" was a contoversial question, but today we know that they propagate the hand work of our ancestors so they are artificial. Some of them were post hills, others are the graves of former notabilities or there were tents of the notabilities built on them. These hills were built by very hard work. Some of them were excavated by researchers while others were disturbed by the eager people. The tales, legends attaching to these hills are about the Tartars, Turkish, outlaws, treasure searchers and shamans. With their appearence the "kurgans" make the landscape varied and they are the part of the Hungarian Landscape. -credit-

KMZ contains cca. 160 placemarks so far sorted in "no image" but most of them in "image illustrated" folders. (stay tuned for updates!)
Some of them needs to fix locations signed by "(?)", however it is worth to turn map-overlays off when checking marks as most of them are located in hi-res areas. using panoramio and/or GEC layers for best viewing!
Descriptions in hungarian so far but i think the photos are the juice of it.
Placemarks also sorted by color. darker marks with no image!
In the folders you will find map overlays which are off as default.

Hope you will like it!

Thank you Gbor, I was thirsty for this collection for ages. My favourite kurgan (Kun burial place) is in Tiszavasvri.

It is a fascinating one.

Of course 5 stars and keep on!

Your friend,

Villa

hi ruralis!
thanks for call!
is the jurta yours not far from them in the panoramio layer?
pitty your camera might have given up just when your eyes have catched those mounds...

i will sign the new mark with a "(?)" till have no further informations about their exact locations and names.

keep up trekking!

cu,
g

GE DATA UPDATE!

download my file attached to OP, zoom in somewhere among the placemarks, then check Layers/Places of Interest/Geographic Features and see miracle*!

many other mounds signed around! some of them pretty correct in location others not.

some of them also can be find in my collection, big part of them not.

file updated with my town's moundz-map and folder!

check both new features for yourselves!

cheers,

g

*Tele Atlas data. (marks "not far" from exact locations)

a mound expert friend just have mailed me an interesting video on YouTube about Uyghur pyramids (burial mounds) in central China.
(check for "more info" on the page)

in a moment i have checked for files on forum and have found these:
Kawi has posted on 01/21/07 then
Akta has done 10 duplicates on 04/14/07 (do not download, all duplicate marks), but after a while,
(after Motawa has put up some individual ones)
Chancery_Gardner has put up their collection on 08/29/08 with several duplicates but also with numerous new ones added.

worth to check panoramio layer when browsing their collections!

it seems in china, no dark medievals, no large-scale agriculture could erase these ancient monuments of the anchestors.
how nice would be in hungary if we would take care of them at last! at least by now, when some still remains...

best,
g
