Hi All Just two for now , stay tuned, Pinecone Burke Provincial Park is a beautiful wilderness area with the unique characteristic of being located on the edge of the densely populated Lower Mainland area of British Columbia. Brackendale Eagles Provincial Park 3,769 eagles Quote:
By the year 2006, British Columbia will have designated nearly 15% of its land to the conservation of natural features. A 15% goal has been widely supported by naturalists, and is now a reality. Where should we go from here? A glance at a tourist map of BC shows impressive areas of green; parks and protected areas appear in green blocks, covering hundreds of square kilometers. The current protected areas system is the result of much thought and effort since Strathcona, the first provincial park was leglislated in the first decade of this century. In the past decade alone the area in "green" has doubled. Ironically, the dramatic increase in area dedicated has been paralleled by an absolute decline in funding by federal and provincial governments . lsn't it now timely and prudent for naturalists to take stock of the accomplishments and management of the 15%, and to consider new directions?
Large parks and protected areas make up most of the provincial "green space." Having reached the goal of designating these larger areas, perhaps it is time for naturalists to reconsider the role of the small conservancy.

A tour of some of the best places, with info. Quote:
Freshwater: There are so many fishable lakes in British Columbia that even if you managed to try a different one each day of the year, you would have to start young and have a very long life (and maybe a floatplane) to visit them all. Hundreds of pleasant lakes are easily reached and fished with simply a vehicle with good ground clearance, a car-top or inflatable boat or float tube, and the right tackle.
Quote:
Saltwater: Salmon are the sportfish of choice in BC's marine waters. Depending on the time of year you'll find chinook (also called king or spring, or tyee if over 30 pounds/13.5 kg), coho (also called silver, blueback, or northern), sockeye, or pink (also called humpy). Coho aren't the biggest salmon but are the most sought after, as they jump and fight like trout. Sockeye are the tastiest salmon of all, while Pinks are similar in size but not as tasty.

Hi, Jeffryv. Just to let you know that I have been working hard at identifying natural features of Northern British Columbia. I am currently working on the area from Kitimat northwards, from the Queen Charlotte Islands to the Alberta border (big hunk, eh?). I will not post the data until I have received the topo maps and can confirm that my labels are correct. Where do I check to see that my map legends conform to Google Earth conventions (i.e., lake/river names, campgrounds, Indian reserves, dams, etc.)? Can user-created icons (say for a ski area) be uploaded? I am coming to BC (from Australia) in June to hike from Hazelton to the headwaters of the Skeena River so the labelling started out to help me with that. Then I just decided that it was a bloody shame that the information wasn't published so I've made it my little personal project. Keeps me up at night, for sure! Anyway, good to see someone else working on BC - it certainly is a majestic region. Between us we'll get the job done. All the best - Susan : Jacaranda Blue Auburn, Sydney, Australia 3350'50" S 15101'18" E

Hi jeffry - Imagine my surprise when I was cruising BC and ran into your "Poop Circles" placemark at the Kamloops Pulp Mill. Your title is funny, but actually the bubbling water circles are quite elegant! Regards, Diane
