Ya the commands work if you type them in correctly but the program is not here, Unless somebody that has it can send me a copy.
We're regressing into the stone age:
The GUI was better than remembering all this crud.
GUI? GUI!?! -- We dont need no steenking GUI! (except for GE ) I thought you were talking about fuctionality.
Lulu: Were you talking about the GUI also? Never mind.
-------------------------- ------------------------- if you dont do any programming, you are not really using a computer--just a very fancy calculator.

I'm not dreaming there used to be a little menu program called ipconfig with buttons that did the same thing. Now we are down to a doz prompt. We are regressing I tell ya. You are right, big deal, who needs a stinking GUI, I agree but I challenge you to follow me around for a single day at work while I configure hundreds of machines all using different operating systems I might add and remember all the prompt commands you must type in to get it all working. Garbage in Garbage out. Stuff like this I don't want to remember. The one that drives me nuts always. Password: Enter password to configure flow valve. Password ? Who the hell knows the password? It was installed 10 years ago and it's worked since who the hell would remember the password? Of course by then the company that makes the thing probably don't know it by then also if they still exist which unfortunately is usually the case. Computers are built to serve us not the other way round.
I have a program called ipconfig in the win32 directory already, It's the stupid doz prompt one. I'm looking for the real one that was in 95 and 98. Probably will not work on XP anyway. Progress.

Oh I found that too. That's not quite the same thing unless you can figure out how to release your ip address from it.
It's kind of useless. Support I don't need no stinking support I need to cancel my IP lease.
Actually I don't but would be easier then trying to explain to people you need to type this in. Press the release button was easier in the past. What was the point of dropping the little utility? Hardly a improvement. Too bad I can't find a win98 machine round so I can take a screenie of it. Hmm must look at work. Lots of dinosaurs there. Some forgotten machine making some part. Got to be one there some where. Hardly need XP for that.

Actually no dinosaurs necessary. Google to the rescue, Problem is I was calling it the wrong name. Similar problem trying to remember passwords on equipment you never installed and nobody seemed to write down in the manual. Program I'm talking about is called winipcfg. It is light years ahead of what the garbage they got in XP now. A screenie can be viewed here: A real program for HUMNANS ! No stinking Doz prompt !

See the little box that says "Repair"? That is the release/renew command, all wrapped into one tidy package. Once it runs, it then outputs all the particulars such as MAC, new IP, gateway, WINS address, DHCP server, and lease time. Modern stuff, not like that ancient hack.

Oh repair. Why didn't I think of that? It's not broken. I want to release it. Repair is a dreaded word on a Microsoft machine. kind of like patch for me. Click and hold your breath kind of thing, and pray to the gods for forgiveness cause you actually thought repair was going to fix something. Does a animated dog pop up when you click it? It was still two clicks away on the old program. "You cannot delete the recycle bin ! Are you sure you want to delete the recycle bin and put it in the recycle bin? " It's more than two clicks I counted 4 clicks.and the laugh of the laugh. Sorry I actually thought for a second that repair would do something but I was wrong. Silly me, this popped up instead: Go figure, No dog though. Sucker born every day. But I am the network administrator !
