Don't confuse the issue. Try to connect to maps.google.com and click the satellite link. If no images show up it's not a problem with your computer. It does not have anything to do with MSN or Firewalls or Spyware or viruses. This has been the problem all along with this glitch is proving beyond a doubt that it is not a local problem. Coral that link I posted up there is global If it can't connect I'm never going to connect. Now that I have manage to get Coral to connect though it will be on it's mirror so everyone will see what I looked at now till the mirror refreshes.

We have heard rumors of some companies blocking access to Google Earth because it was too popular with their employees (either because of bandwidth or productivity, we're not sure). If there were a bandwidth concern, you might consider contacting your ISP to see if it works for them or if they might have blocked it (I don't know of any ISP that has done this, but sporadic failure doesn't sound like a local PC issue).

I know my ISP blocks or restricts programs like Kazaa and other peer to peer programs and is anti the use of Voice Chat - it competes with its telephone network and is a monopoly in South Africa.

It reserves the right to block any other programs which maybe heavy users of bandwidth. Since Katrina GE would certainly qualify.

Just saying why I asked.

If you can find out if it is blocked, we would be very interested in talking to them because it would clearly cause confusion/pain for our users.

Well the issue here for me anyway is not blocking by my ISP or company cause I'm not on a company computer My ISP don't care really what I do as long as I don't break the law I guess. Remember though, don't confuse the issue. Even the Coral Network could not get information intact from kh.google.com yesterday.
Like I said if that service cannot connect I don't have a chance. Look at all the servers they have around the planet. It's the closest one that connects to kh.google.com then it mirrored out. You guys there are sitting a few miles away from keyhole or your right in the same building going there no problem there is no problem. Go somewhere else and try to connect then. I'm online right now though. There is a problem it's been this way for weeks now. More and more people are reporting it every single day.

Even If I gave up on this thread like LuLu did the problem for you guys is not going to go away. More people will be coming here every day and saying they cannot connect. I've narrowed the problem right down to kh.google.com and you still are not looking into it. Maybe it's this, maybe it's that. No Maybe we are right and it is kh.google.com that is having the problem after all. Katrina seemed to make this problem even worse cause there is way more users now in a very short time. Forget Google Earth connecting this problem shows up also on maps.google.com for the data coming from kh.google.com. So it's not the program, it's your servers.

Based on the error message that Google is spitting out and my experiments... here's what I believe is happening.

One or more PCs connected to the Telkom network, most likely attached via ADSL are infected with some sort of worm that is targeting the Google block of IP addresses. They have therefore blocked (probably automatically) the IP addresses from which the attack is coming.

The problem is that the ADSL IP addersses are dynamic and I as a "good" user can easily end up with an IP address that was doing "bad" things yesterday. That leaves me up the creek.

I installed a proxy server on one of my company's server installed at UUNet and routed my web traffic throught that and Voila! problem solved.

So my guess is that Google has denied access to a large chunk of Telkom / ADSL IP addresses and we can only hope that it's a temporary measure.

The VBR uses who were inadvertently getting blocked should now be able to get access to GE imagery, Maps satellite, and VBR overlays without problem. I'm very sorry for the confusion, especially after my message on Saturday that there were no known problems... turns out we provoked one on Sunday.

Note that the signature of this kind of failure is that you can access Google Maps, but not Maps satellite.

Is the 20717 error a separate issue? ( Google Earth could not contact the authentication server)
I'm getting the error both from home and work, from separate ISPs.
