We are trying something new tonight. The DG data from August 31st has been posted to Maps and we are now offering a dynamic-VBR-overlay of that data on top of Google Earth. This is running on an experimental server and uptime is not guaranteed.

After you zoom into New Orleans, 2 seconds after your motion stops, it will fetch tiled overlays. You can adjust the transparency of the whole group by selecting the well-labeled folder containing the overlays. Each time you move and then stop, it will update.

We would love to get your feedback after giving it a try.

(FYI: VBR==ViewBasedRefresh network link)

Top job.

It's so much easier than loading the individual overlays. It's great that it overlays the areas you want to look at just like the usual GE style. Beats gussing which overlay covered the area you wanted, and all this without crashing my PC.

Great new (even if temporary) feature !

I would say this invention is great in essence. It palliates all the inconveniences with the overlay method. For me it's the first time I can see the flood mapped in GE, with overlays it was impossible as I only got empty semitransparent boxes. So thanks very much for this effort!
Then... "dynamic-VBR-overlay" is the name for the new creature? When is the baptism?

Very impressive implementation.

You'll have to teach us how to do that VBR network link sometime. So much more efficient than the user generated posts, which were also awesome.

A true community service.

Penguin O send our thanks to the G Team. They've just created a new category of information organizing.

All hail.

This idea is excellent, but given the extent of the concerned area, I wonder if it wouldn't be more appropriate to have another image bank, much like the original one, so that people could switch on and see it the same way they can already view the "old" images.

That said, this view-based refresh method is really interesting. I just hope it's not a resource hog on your side.
Oh well. I'm sure Google can handle

Thanks for the overlays!!
I have noticed that one needs to get about 1300 feet "eye level" in order to get detail. Once I have done that I have to find the checked overlay and "refresh" to get a view. If i dont locate the overlay and refresh it will
not load.
Also if one backs out to about 3000 feet one has loss of overlay for the area chosen.
Also there are some errors popping up which are very unusual and may be suspect
will do a complete system scan .

Very impressive. It's just sad that the circumstances that provoked this enhancement are so tragic.
