I've been working on this for a while and reckon it's now ready for public viewing.

The aim of this collection is to pinpoint every broadcast radio and television transmitter in the British Isles (i.e. the U.K, Ireland and surrounding islands).

Sites are shown by either a yellow or red pushpin. Those that are yellow have been positively identified and the co-ordinates adjusted so that the pin appears next to the mast itself. Red pushpins indicate the site as given by NGR or lat/long but the mast has not (yet) been identified. This is either because the map is not high enough resolution or, in the case of minor relay transmitters, simply because I've not been able to find it in the picture! For recent transmitters (e.g. community radio) it may be that the imagery is not recent enough.

If anyone has corrections or additions, I would be very grateful to receive them and they will be incorporated in the collection as soon as possible.

I will in any case, be making updated versions available, as I add more sites.

15/8/07 - kmz file updated. Quite a lot more sites identified, mainly thanks to the additional hi-res google pictures. A few more sites added as well.

Still need better pictures for Scotland, Ireland, IoM & CI before those areas can be done fully.

17/09/07 - another update. Quite a few Irish sites now but still more needed.

04/10/07 - another update. Now adding MF sites.

17/10/07 - another update. Should now include all BBC sites and a lot of ILR stuff. Also all Digital 1 dab sites. The Irish sites from the posting below are also included.

11/01/08 - a fairly major upgrade. Now includes all mf/lf broadcast sites, as well as FM, TV & DAB. Some aero VOR/DME beacons also added. Have confirmed locations for those parts of Wales, Scotland and Ireland that have received hi-res map updates recently. Will do more when the mapping allows.

30/01/08 - more updating. Only one or two broadcast sites added now as I really do think most are on there at last! Some main microwave sites (BT etc) added. The criteria for most is that they are large structures. There's no intention to add lots of mobile phone sites - just stuff that's interesting. A new pin colour (blue) has been introduced to indicate non-broadcast sites.

08/04/08 - more position updates because hi-res data for Wales is now available. A couple of new sites but this is more of a cosmetic update than anything.

15/05/08 - minor update only.

06/03/09 - More updates now that hi-res data for central Scotland is available. A couple more sites added as well.

17/03/09 - More updates. Quite a lot of non-broadcast sites added. Also some sites in South Wales updated to yellow pin status due to better imagery.

19/06/09 - A few new sites but more importantly, a lot more sites in Scotland are now accurately located as high-res imagery has now been made available for a large section of the country. As the Scilly Isles are also now high-res, we're just waiting for the rest of Ireland now.

25/08/09 - A general update. I have removed all utility stations from this file and have now created a separate file containing locations that just carry utility transmissions. These are marked with a blue pin so you can overlay the file with the broadcast one.

If there are any transmitter sites not included (of any type) please let me know!

Nice job Nigel. I'm building a database which relies on info extracted from ITU listings. Not much of it is broadcast, mostly comms. I'd be happy to pass a file in MS Access format if it is of interest.

Do you know that the "Whitehaven MF" is and what it is for? Looks like a 90m aerial.

The Whitehaven mf transmitter site is used to broadcast BBC 5 Live on 909kHz and BBC Radio Cumbria on 1458kHz.

This is pretty cool, but have you made contact with "mb21" at all - it seems to me there is a great overlap of interest:

I looked at a couple of sites I know very well and can see some improvement could be given from those that know sites well, but how do we report it easily to you. For example you will not easily find Bexhill VHF (red pointer) among the houses and I would have to place a pointer somehow for you...

Also for any multi mast site a choice needs to be made - I take it that your criterion is masts and towers and not necessarily their associated buildings? For example Bexhill MF - the point is in the right field but not on either mast or the building!

Do you know if anyone has produced a simpler version containing only the analogue TV transmitters?
