This is a starting thread for a collection of data problems and errors associated with the new SKY universe within Google Earth. It does not include interesting astronomical discoveries.

It will evolve in its organization as various categories of problems become better defined and technically explained. As the number of problems mounts and technical explanations are provided, this thread will be subdivided into subpostings.

Credits for each discovery are contained in the attached download file. If you want to add your own problem discoveries, please start your own thread in this "Data Discussions" forum, or post it in the Google Earth Earth Data/Imagery help group, where they will be examined for inclusion.

Special thanks to bebop, hale, Noisette, sasroodkapje, simon_a, and syzygy for their help in identifying problems, other folks' related postings, and evaluations of errors.

Initial collections:
  • Circuit Boards

  • Colored Rectangles
    Simple rectangles or film strips

  • Doughnuts
The black crosshairs in these images (and in Pies, below) are caused by the "spiders" in telescopes, explained by hill in THIS POSTING and HERE.

  • Empty Sky
Areas of missing imagery -- not astronomical discoveries of empty space.
Picture of black rectangular space is not supplied here

  • Heiroglyphics

  • Line Segments

  • Pies

  • Protoplasm (some of these may not be problems)

  • Stellar Emissions

  • Strings

  • Worms

  • Other

Star emissions seem to be the biggest eye sore for me. From afar you think its a nebula and then zoom in to see this.

It doesnt take much to clean it up. I did the next picture in about 10 minutes with PSP.

Of course, not all background stars, etc are placed back in the right spots. Would need a true expert to get that part right. But it would be a lot nicer to see them cleaned up a bit.

from my first post http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1209132 (space freaks) my kml won't open where it is supposed to (on Mars' surface) ...or else the planet moved?? Also neat, go some where in space then switch to earth view laugh (I ended up in the middle of the Pacific from my "Mars" seat.
